Ruiz, Oswalt help Phils beat Braves

Apr 9, 2011 - 9:05 PM Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Carlos Ruiz belted a grand slam off the bench to highlight a five-run seventh inning, as the Philadelphia Phillies downed the Atlanta Braves, 10-2, in the middle test of a three-game series at Turner Field.

Ruiz added an RBI double in his next at-bat to finish with a career-high five RBI for the Phillies, who have won six of eight games to begin the season.

Philadelphia's other catcher, Brian Schneider, hit a two-run homer before being replaced by the man affectionately known as "Chooch."

Roy Oswalt (2-0) gave up two runs -- one earned -- on five hits over six innings to pick up his first career win over Atlanta. The right-hander had gone 0-3 with a 6.21 ERA in nine previous games (eight starts) against the Braves.

"I didn't think about it when I got on the field," Oswalt said about his history against Atlanta.

Oswalt has now beaten every team in the National League.

Brandon Beachy (0-1) was tagged for four runs on seven hits in six-plus frames for Atlanta, which has dropped four of five.

"I thought we swung the bats pretty good," said Braves third baseman Chipper Jones.

Down 3-2, the Braves loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth, but Oswalt retired Jason Heyward on a popup to third baseman Placido Polanco to end the inning.

Unlike Atlanta, Philadelphia capitalized on its opportunity with the bases loaded in the top of the seventh.

George Sherrill took over on the mound after Beachy gave up a leadoff double to Raul Ibanez. Pinch-hitter John Mayberry, Jr. singled and Wilson Valdez walked before Ruiz crushed an 0-2 pitch from Scott Linebrink over the left- field wall for his first career grand slam. It also was his first pinch-hit home run.

Shane Victorino followed the blast with a single and scored on Ryan Howard's two-out double to make it 8-2.

The Phillies tacked on two more runs in the eighth when Ruiz doubled home Michael Martinez. Victorino then stroked an RBI single.

Victorino doubled to right field to begin the game and scored on a two-out single by Ben Francisco, giving Philadelphia an early 1-0 lead.

The Braves moved ahead with two runs in the third. Alex Gonzalez led off the inning with his 300th career double and Freddie Freeman followed with an RBI single to left field. After Beachy dropped down a sacrifice bunt, Martin Prado grounded a single to right. A fielding error by Francisco allowed Freeman to score.

Philadelphia regained the lead in the fourth on Schneider's home run. Ibanez drew a two-out walk, then the Phillies backup catcher drilled a Beachy offering to the right-field seats.

Game Notes

Ruiz's home run was the Phillies' first pinch-hit grand slam since Matt Stairs did it on September 10, 2009 against Washington...Oswalt has won his last nine regular-season decisions...Victorino finished 4-for-5...Beachy made his fifth major league start, third against the Phillies.
