Shooting fish in a barrel: Hanson, Braves blank Marlins

Apr 13, 2011 - 2:48 AM Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Chipper Jones knocked in two runs to help back seven shutout innings from Tommy Hanson, as the Atlanta Braves earned a 5-0 win over the Florida Marlins in the opener of a three-game series at Turner Field.

Jason Heyward and Brian McCann each hit a solo homer for Atlanta, which had dropped five of six coming into the contest. Nate McLouth drove in a run with a double.

Hanson (1-2) allowed four hits and a pair of walks while striking out five. Three relievers combined to give up only one hit and two walks in two innings.

"I felt good from the time I started warming up," Hanson said. "I just wanted to go into this game and be aggressive and it worked out. I felt really good."

Chris Coghlan and Mike Stanton each had a pair of hits for the Marlins, who have lost two in a row and three of five overall.

Chris Volstad (0-1) was roughed up for five runs on eight hits over 4 2/3 frames. The right-hander walked two and fanned three.

"A guy like Tommy (Hanson) with great stuff like that, it's tough to hit," Marlins outfielder Logan Morrison said. "He just pounded the zone and set the tone for them."

Atlanta put a pair of runs on the board in the third to open the scoring. Martin Prado singled for the Braves' first hit and scored on McLouth's double to right. Jones chased in another with a base hit to left.

Heyward crushed a solo homer to straightaway center field in the fourth, and Hanson worked out of a jam by stranding a pair of runners in the fifth.

The Braves tacked on two more in the home half to make it a 5-0 game. Prado led off the inning with a double, advanced to third on a bunt and scored on Jones' sacrifice fly to left. McCann followed with a shot over the right-field fence.

Eric O'Flaherty and Peter Moylan combined to work a scoreless eighth, stranding a pair.

Scott Linebrink took over for the ninth and allowed a one-out walk to Gaby Sanchez, but retired the next two batters to end the game.
