Phillies shut out Braves

May 8, 2011 - 2:56 AM Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Ryan Howard reached a milestone with a fourth-inning home run, and Kyle Kendrick tossed five scoreless innings as Philadelphia topped Atlanta, 3-0, in the second edition of a three-game series.

Howard hit his 260th career blast, moving him past Del Ennis into second place on Philadelphia's franchise list. Hall of Fame third baseman Mike Schmidt is first with 548.

Shane Victorino and Pete Orr knocked in a run each for the Phillies, who have won four of their last five and turned in their sixth shutout victory of the year.

Kendrick (2-2), who got the start after Roy Oswalt was first scratched, then placed on the 15-day disabled list with back problems, allowed two hits and fanned three.

"I was getting ahead most of the night, on pitcher's counts, instead of getting behind 2-0," Kendrick said. "Most of the night I was ahead, and that was big. I got some early quick outs and they didn't see me all that much each turn. It's fun pitching like that."

Dan Uggla doubled for the Braves, whose six-game win streak came to a halt.

Julio Teheran (0-1), making his MLB debut after Atlanta purchased his contract from Triple-A Gwinnett, lasted 4 2/3 innings in the loss. He yielded four hits and three runs with two walks.

Orr's fielder's choice grounder with runners on the corners in the second put the Phils on the board.

Howard's monster leadoff homer in the fourth made it 2-0, and pushed the slugger into sole possession of second place on the franchise home run list.

Victorino tripled home Jimmy Rollins with two down in the fifth, and it was all the offense the Phils' staff needed.

Kendrick didn't allow a runner past second in his five frames. J.C. Romero worked out of a two-on, no-out jam in the sixth, Mike Stutes and Antonio Bastardo turned in relatively quiet scoreless innings, then Ryan Madson notched his third save by turning aside the Braves in the ninth.

"We hit some balls at people with no results. That's the way the game goes sometimes. It can be cruel," said Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez. "If some of those fall in, it's a different ballgame."
