Santana, Angels dominate Atlanta

May 21, 2011 - 5:51 AM Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - Ervin Santana tossed a four-hit shutout and the Angels crushed Atlanta's Tim Hudson to open a three-game interleague series with a 9-0 rout.

Santana (2-4) needed 103 pitches to complete his sixth career shutout, as he struck out seven and did not walk a batter to help the Angels snap a five-game losing streak.

"They were swinging at everything, so I told myself to keep the ball down and throw strikes," Santana said. "We needed it."

Mark Trumbo went 3-for-4 with a three-run homer while Alberto Callaspo had two hits and three RBI in the lopsided decision.

In one of the worst starts of his career, Hudson surrendered eight runs on seven hits and three walks in just 3 2/3 innings for the Braves, losers of three straight following a 5-1 stretch.

The Angels batted around in their six-run third inning, with Bobby Abreu, Torii Hunter and Hank Conger each driving in runs prior to Trumbo turning on a hanging breaking ball and sending it into the left-field seats for his seventh home run of the year.

The hosts loaded the bases with two outs in the fourth, and Callaspo slapped a double down the left-field line to bring in Peter Bourjos and Maicer Izturis, effectively ending Hudson's short outing.

Callaspo tacked on an RBI groundout in the sixth, which was more than enough for Santana, who gave up all singles and never let a runner reach second base.

Fittingly, Santana struck out pinch-hitter David Ross looking to end the game.

"For [Hudson] it was just one of those nights. I'm worried more about our offense," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said.
