Rizzo highlights San Diego's rout of Braves

Jun 25, 2011 - 6:32 AM San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - Rookie Anthony Rizzo had a breakout game with two doubles and scored three times in the San Diego Padres' 11-2 thumping of the Atlanta Braves to open a three-game set.

The San Diego offense, which recorded 12 hits, was on full throttle to get its third straight win.

Ryan Ludwick, Cameron Maybin, Alberto Gonzalez and Jesus Guzman all drove in two runs while starting pitcher Tim Stauffer (3-5) got the win in seven innings. He allowed two runs on four hits with nine strikeouts.

"It was a lot of fun to be a part of," Stauffer said. "It's good to see some results of some guys who have been hitting the ball pretty well. It was good to see some of the breaks go our way and it was just fun to be a part of."

Freddie Freeman had a two-run homer for the Braves, who had a four-game win streak snapped.

Derek Lowe (3-6) surrendered five runs on eight hits over 5 2/3 innings to take the loss.

"It was a frustrating game because they weren't hitting the cover off the ball, but they were getting hits and runs," Lowe said.

San Diego scored a run in both the second and third innings. Nick Hundley brought in the first run with a grounder through the left side and Will Venable touched home on Ludwick's force out in the third.

The Padres tacked on three runs in the sixth to go up 5-0. Gonzalez's single with the bases loaded scored both Rizzo and Maybin, which was followed by Stauffer's RBI single.

Atlanta would cut into the deficit on Freeman's two-run homer during the seventh.

However, the home team would blow the game open with a six-run home half of the seventh. Ludwick doubled in Orlando Hudson before Maybin drove in two on a triple into dead center. Maybin then came home on Dan Uggla's throwing error after fielding Gonzalez's grounder. Guzman came in to pinch hit and belted a two-run homer to end the burst.

Game Notes

San Diego takes a 4-3 lead in the season series...Stauffer improved to 3-1 lifetime against the Braves...Atlanta had just four hits in the game and had two errors.
