Padres use homers to down Dodgers
Apr 11, 2011 - 2:12 AM San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - Nick Hundley hit a two-run homer, while both Ryan Ludwick and Cameron Maybin added solo shots to help San Diego beat Los Angeles, 7-2, at PETCO Park.Alberto Gonzalez and Jorge Cantu also drove in a run each for the Padres, who avoided a sweep and halted a three-game losing skid.
Aaron Harang (2-0) turned in six strong innings, allowing three hits and two runs (one earned).
Andre Ethier posted an RBI for the Dodgers, who couldn't sustain the momentum from two wins on Saturday.
"I was a little disappointed today," said Dodgers manager Don Mattingly. "I thought we would at least put more pressure on them, as far as being able to get runners out there and do some things."
John Ely (0-1), recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque on Sunday, was charged with six hits and four runs with three walks and five strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings.
In the home sixth, San Diego turned a 2-1 lead into a three-run edge after Hundley's two-out, two-run blast to center. Ludwick worked a walk in the previous at-bat to keep the inning alive.
James Loney's fielder's choice in the seventh plated a run thanks to an error by Harang, getting the Dodgers within two. But Maybin's leadoff shot in the home half pushed the advantage back to three. In the eighth, a Gonzalez run- scoring single and Maybin's RBI triple opened up a 7-2 edge.
"I wanted to figure out a way to drive the ball in those gaps and try to open it up and be able to run," Maybin said. "So that was a blast. That was just as fun as going out of the park."
Pat Neshek closed out the win by inducing a double-play grounder from Loney.
Ethier's groundout scored Tony Gwynn, Jr. in the first, but the Padres pushed across single runs in the third and fourth on Cantu's single and Ludwick's leadoff homer.
