Padres top Phils, end 10-game skid vs. Philadelphia

Jul 25, 2011 - 11:15 PM Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - The streak is over.

It took more than a year, but the San Diego Padres have ended their drought against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Chris Denorfia highlighted a four-run second inning with a steal of home, as the Padres held on to win, 5-4, and salvage the finale of a four-game series at Citizens Bank Park.

San Diego snapped a 10-game skid versus the Phillies with their first victory over the National League East leaders since June 7, 2010.

And it came against All-Star southpaw Cliff Lee (9-7), who surrendered all five runs and matched a season high by giving up 10 hits in just four innings.

Chase Headley had three of those hits, including an RBI double in the second, for the Padres.

"We came out swinging," said San Diego manager Bud Black. "We knew we had a big challenge against one of the best pitchers in the game and our guys responded."

Aaron Harang (9-2) permitted four runs on eight hits over six frames to win his fifth straight decision.

The Phillies opened the scoring in the first inning on Shane Victorino's RBI double off the right field wall. It could have been more, but Ryan Howard was thrown out at home trying to score from first on the play.

San Diego began the decisive second inning with a two-bagger from Jesus Guzman, who scored the tying run on Rob Johnson's one-out double -- where Philadelphia right fielder Domonic Brown made a diving attempt and had the ball deflect off his glove.

Lee struck out his counterpart, but three more runners crossed the plate before the third out was recorded. Denorfia singled home Johnson and took second base on the throw home. Denorfia then stole third base and, after Jason Bartlett drew a walk, he hustled home on a lazy pickoff throw to first base by Lee. Headley followed with a run-scoring double to center.

"It's the first time that's ever happened. I didn't even consider (a steal of home) as a possibility," Lee said. "Next time I'm in that situation, I'm gonna make more of a firm throw to first and not allow that to happen."

Ryan Ludwick added a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning to put San Diego up 5-1, but the Phillies chipped away at the deficit, beginning with two runs in the bottom portion.

After Raul Ibanez ripped a one-out double, Brown hit a fly ball to right- center that fell in between Denorfia and Ludwick, who collided on the play. Brown, who was credited with his first career triple, then scored on a single by Carlos Ruiz.

Ibanez singled home Victorino in the sixth, and the Phillies threatened to pull even in the eighth. Padres reliever Mike Adams struck out both Chase Utley and Howard looking before Victorino slapped a triple to right field. Adams, though, coaxed a ground ball to third from Ibanez to preserve the lead.

Heath Bell gave up a leadoff walk to Brown in the ninth, but closed out the game to earn his 29th save of the season.
