Millwood shuts down Padres

Sep 3, 2011 - 7:05 AM San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - Kevin Millwood tossed seven scoreless innings and Troy Tulowitzki knocked in a pair of runs to push the Rockies over the Padres, 3-0, in the opener of a three-game series.

Millwood (2-1) scattered seven hits and struck out eight, while Rex Brothers and Rafael Betancourt each hurled an inning of relief to finish off the shutout, with Betancourt picking up his fifth save.

Jonathan Herrera went 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored for Colorado, which had just been swept in a three-game series at Arizona.

Aaron Harang (12-5) was the hard-luck loser after allowing three runs -- two earned -- on five hits over seven innings.

"I felt good tonight. I felt like I was hitting my spots," Harang said. "They got some hits that fell, a couple tough breaks."

San Diego did not record an extra-base hit in its season-high eighth straight loss.

Dexter Fowler led off the fourth with a triple over Kyle Blanks' head in left field for Colorado's first hit. Herrera followed with a run-scoring single, then scored later in the frame on a Tulowitzki groundout.

"Any time you come here you know it's going to be an offensive struggle a little bit," Tulowitzki said. "To get runs early is very important."

Tulowitzki knocked in Herrera with a two-out single to left in the sixth, and the Rockies held on from there.
