Angels hold off White Sox

Apr 16, 2011 - 6:08 AM Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Macier Izturis drove in two runs as part of a four-run fourth inning, and that's all the Angels needed to beat the White Sox, 4-3, to start a three-game set.

Jered Weaver (4-0) continued his hot start with seven solid innings, which was interrupted by rain for a 30 minute-delay in the sixth inning. He gave up three runs -- two earned -- on four hits and struck out four.

"It's great to get off to a good start," Weaver said. "They've been giving me some runs and that takes a lot of pressure off."

Izturis and Alberto Callaspo each had three hits for the Angles, who have won three straight games.

Adam Dunn had a two-run homer for Chicago, which has fallen to 4-4 during a 10- game homestand. White Sox starting pitcher Philip Humber (1-1) got the loss, allowing four runs -- two earned -- on six hits in five innings.

"I didn't have much of a feel for anything tonight. I just tried to battle," Humber said.

After Weaver tossed two perfect innings, he pegged A.J. Pierzynski to lead off the third. Pierzynski then moved to second on an Alexei Ramirez single and scored three batters later on Gordon Beckham's grounder through the gap between second and third for a 1-0 lead.

However, the Angels got that run back and some during the next frame.

Vernon Wells drew a one-out walk in the fourth and scored on Mark Trumbo's single up the middle. Hank Conger reached first on Brent Morel's bad throw to first to score Callaspo, who reached base on a single.

The Angels kept pouring it on thanks to Izturis double into the right field gap that plated Trumbo and Conger to finish off a four-run inning.

Weaver continued to cruse during the bottom of the fourth and the fifth, but the game was delayed in the top of the sixth with two outs.

After the short delay, the teams were back at it, including Weaver. The ace, though, served a two-run shot to just the second batter he faced, Dunn, after the delay to make it a 4-3 game in the sixth.

The score stayed that way despite the Angels loading the bases in the eighth, but Will Ohman came in and got Izturis to swing at a third strike in the dirt.

The White Sox loaded the bases during the bottom of the inning when Fernando Rodney came in, however, he got Carlos Quentin to fly out to right to end the threat.

The rain came pouring down during the bottom of the ninth inning and the tarps were called out to cover the field. But just as soon as the grounds crew was called on the field the rain let up making it a total of a three-minute rain delay.

Jordan Walden then came in for a 1-2-3 inning to record his second save of the season.
