White Sox hold on to defeat Athletics
May 14, 2011 - 6:53 AMVideo
Phil Humber (3-3) was solid in his start, allowing three runs on six hits in six-plus innings to get the win, Chicago's fifth in six games.
"I don't think anyone was expecting much out of me to start the year, but hopefully they're starting to expect more out of me," Humber said.
David DeJesus went 2-for-3 with an RBI for Oakland, which dropped the opener of this three-game series after splitting a rain-shortened series with the Rangers.
Brandon McCarthy (1-4) was charged with four runs -- three earned -- on five hits over seven innings in the loss.
Humber gave up just two hits through the first six innings before the A's rallied in the seventh.
Three straight singles loaded the bases, and Humber was pulled after a wild pitch plated Ryan Sweeney and a DeJesus single brought in Hideki Matsui for a 4-2 game.
Jesse Crain came in from the bullpen and yielded a sacrifice fly to Kevin Kouzmanoff before getting out of the inning holding a one-run lead.
Coco Crisp took a chance on the basepaths in the bottom of the eighth. With the left-handed Matt Thornton working out of the stretch, Crisp took a big lead off third base with the right-handed hitting Conor Jackson up as a pinch- hitter.
Crisp broke for home on high 0-1 fastball, but wasn't fast enough to get by catcher A.J. Pierzynski, who dove in front of the plate to tag the runner out on his head-first slide.
"It was all on me. I felt like I had it," Crisp said of his attempt.
Sergio Santos worked a 1-2-3 ninth to pick up his fourth save of the season.
The White Sox put their first three hitters on base to start their four-run second inning. Paul Konerko started the frame with a single and eventually scored on a fielder's choice groundout from Alex Rios, and Carlos Quentin came around on Vizquel's double down the right-field line.
Gordon Beckham pushed another run across with a sacrifice fly, and Vizquel scored on McCarthy's errant pickoff throw.
