Weaver comes through as Halos shut down ChiSox
Aug 25, 2011 - 5:25 AM Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - Jered Weaver tossed seven shutout innings in his first start since signing a five-year extension with the Angels, who got three RBI from Erick Aybar in an 8-0 victory over the Chicago White Sox.Weaver (15-6) snapped a four-start winless stretch by holding Chicago to four hits while walking two and striking out eight in his outing.
Torii Hunter added a solo homer for Los Angeles, which has won a season-high six straight to pull within 2 1/2 games of AL West-leading Texas. The Rangers host the Angels for three games starting on Friday.
"I love the way we're playing right now, taking one game at a time and not worrying about Texas," said Hunter.
Zach Stewart (1-3) was tagged for seven runs on seven hits in six-plus innings for the ChiSox, who have dropped five of their last seven.
The Angels took Tuesday's opener of the two-game set, 5-4, on Peter Bourjos' RBI single in the ninth inning.
They didn't wait that long to wrap up the quick sweep, pushing three across in their second at-bat when Aybar's bloop single scored Mark Trumbo and Jeff Mathis' double deep into the left-field gap plated Vernon Wells and Aybar.
Hunter homered in the third, and a four-spot in the seventh made it a rout.
Aybar knocked in a pair with a two-bagger down the first-base line, and consecutive two-out doubles from Alberto Callaspo and Bobby Abreu each brought in a run for an 8-0 cushion.
Weaver only allowed two runners beyond first base, and Bobby Cassevah and Fernando Rodney each hurled a scoreless inning of relief to complete the shutout.
"Today is one of those days you throw away and come back the next day," White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said.
Game Notes
Alejandro De Aza's two-out double in the third inning was Chicago's only extra-base hit...Weaver lowered his earned run average from 2.10 to 2.03. He improved to 7-1 at home this year...Chicago had lost consecutive road games just once since June 18.
