Angels top Indians in 11

May 7, 2011 - 6:43 AM Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - Torii Hunter came through in the 11th inning with an RBI single to give the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim a 2-1 win over the Cleveland Indians during the opener of a three-game series.

Fernando Rodney (1-1) got the win, pitching a perfect 11th inning for the Angels, who have won three in a row. Tyler Chatwood was splendid in the no- decision start, surrendering just one run on two hits with five strikeouts in eight innings for the Halos.

"Chatwood had a terrific performance against one of the best teams in baseball," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "He got through eight innings. He brought his game and that was important."

Travis Hafner brought in the lone run for the Indians, who suffered just their second loss in 10 games. Justin Germano (0-1) got the loss, serving up four straight singles to lose the game.

The Angels started the bottom of the 11th with three consecutive singles from Erick Aybar, Bobby Abreu and Maicer Izturis to load the bases and set up Hunter's clutch hit that gave the home team the win. Hunter roped the second pitch he saw down the left-field line to bring home Aybar.

"I tried to get something out to the outfield," Hunter said of his hit. "He left the curveball up. I'll take the single and the RBI and we'll take the win."

Chatwood pegged Asdrubal Cabrera to start out the fourth and it proved to be costly. Cabrera advanced to third on Carlos Santana's single and then raced home on Hafner's groundout to first.

Meanwhile, Indians starting hurler Justin Masterson looked to be on his way to his sixth win of the season, until he slipped up in the sixth to allow the Angels to tie it up.

Abreu started with a single and scored all the way from first on Izturis' double into the right-center gap.

But the Indians' pitcher got some help from his defense during the next batter when Hunter flied out to Shin-Soo Choo, who gunned a tagging Izturis at third base for a double play. Choo then caught Albert Callaspo's flyout to end the inning.

From there, neither team was able to score and the game had to be decided in extras.

"Tonight we battled," Indians manager Manny Acta said. "Justin Masterson was very good. He gave us seven innings. I thought our guys played well. They got the win, but I'm happy with the way our guys played."

Game Notes

The Angels are 4-4 in extra inning games, while the Indians fell to 3-2...It was Cleveland's third extra-inning game in six contests...Masterson went seven innings, allowing one run on nine hits and fanned five.
