Nolasco stymies Giants, halts Marlins' skid

Miami, FL (Sports Network) - Ricky Nolasco hurled eight strong innings to lead the Florida Marlins past the San Francisco Giants, 2-1, in the opener of a three-game series.

Nolasco (9-8) allowed one run on six hits and a walk. His four strikeouts in the contest give him 755 with the Marlins, edging him closer to Dontrelle Willis' franchise record of 757.

Logan Morrison and Mike Stanton knocked in runs for the Marlins, who snapped a seven-game losing streak.

Leo Nunez pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his 32nd save of the season.

Pablo Sandoval's historic home run in the first inning accounted for the Giants' lone run. It was San Francisco's 20th consecutive solo home run, surpassing the 1914 Philadelphia Phillies' record of 19 straight solo shots.

Matt Cain (9-9) allowed just two runs on six hits and two walks through six innings, but took the tough-luck loss.

San Francisco has now lost 11 of its last 14 games.

"We've said quite a few times here during this stretch that we're better than this, but we have got to show it," said Giants manager Bruce Bochy.

Sandoval's homer in the top of the first gave the Giants an early lead.

But Florida answered back in the bottom of the frame. Alfredo Amezaga singled with one out and came around to score on Morrison's stand-up triple into the right-center gap. Morrison then crossed the plate on Stanton's base hit to left, giving the Marlins a 2-1 lead.

"Those two big runs in the first were huge," said Nolasco. "It's always good when you give up a run in the first and your team gives you the lead back."

The Giants put runners in scoring position only once.

After Eli Whiteside's leadoff single in the third, Cain laid down a bunt toward first. Gaby Sanchez attempted to get the force at second, but threw the ball into center field and everyone was safe. Andres Torres followed with a sacrifice bunt to put runners on second and third, but Jeff Keppinger flied out to right. Aubrey Huff then popped out to short after Sandoval was intentionally walked, ending the inning and keeping the score 2-1.

Florida recalled pitchers Chris Volstad and Jose Ceda from Triple-A New Orleans Friday...Giants right fielder Carlos Beltran sat out his fourth straight contest due to a sprained right wrist...Cain has now gone 11 straight outings without allowing a home run...The Marlins improved to 24-37 at home this season...San Francisco fell to 28-16 in one-run games.
