D-Backs' Collmenter wins debut in pitchers' duel

May 15, 2011 - 2:28 AM Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Josh Collmenter pitched six scoreless innings in his first major league start and Melvin Mora hit a sacrifice fly to account for the only run scored, as Arizona defeated Los Angeles, 1-0, despite getting just one hit in the second of a three-game series.

Collmenter (2-0) allowed just two hits and struck out three, getting the start after appearing in relief seven times this season. He retired the final 11 batters he faced after allowing a one-out double to Chad Billingsley in the third inning.

Stephen Drew had the lone hit for the D-Backs as Arizona ended its five-game slide.

Billingsley (2-3) took the hard-luck loss after allowing one run and one hit while fanning eight through eight innings.

James Loney had two of the Dodgers' four hits as their three-game winning streak came to an end.

Drew led off the second with a double and moved to third on Billingsley's errant pickoff attempt. Mora hit a sacrifice fly two batters later to score Drew and give Arizona the only run it would need.

"A big win for us. I never thought that would be the only hit for us, but it worked out. Josh (Collmenter) was unbelievable. He's sneaky and fun to watch," said Drew.

The Dodgers had men in scoring position in the final two innings but could not push anyone across the plate.

Loney led off the eighth inning with a ground-rule double to right field off David Hernandez and was replaced by pinch-runner Tony Gwynn Jr. Rod Barajas followed with a sacrifice bunt to put the tying run on third with one away. But pinch-hitters Dioner Navarro struck out and Jay Gibbons flied out to end the threat.

J.J. Putz allowed a single to Jamey Carroll to start the ninth, then struck out Aaron Miles before walking Andre Ethier. Matt Kemp followed by grounding into a 6-4-3 double play to give Putz his eighth save of the season.

"This is a tough one to lose. We pitched well. They pitched well. We obviously have to score runs," said Dodgers manager Don Mattingly.

Game Notes

Ethier has now reached base safely in 37 straight games...The last time the Dodgers lost while allowing only one hit was a 3-2 loss to the Cubs on July 17, 1914...Arizona had lost five straight games by one-run before winning this one.
