Astros down Brewers in extras

Apr 24, 2011 - 4:32 AM Milwaukee, WI (Sports Network) - Humberto Quintero's two-run, ground-rule double in the 10th inning lifted the Astros over the Brewers, 9-6, in the second of a three-game series.

Brandon Lyon (1-1) earned the win, despite blowing a save opportunity. He threw two innings and allowed one run on two hits and two walks while striking out one to give Houston its fifth win in the last nine games.

Sean Green (0-1) took the loss, allowing three runs on three hits and one walk in two-thirds of an inning, handing Milwaukee its second loss in the past three games.

Lyon entered the game in the ninth and earned a blown save when Ryan Braun got a one-out single and was brought home with a double by Prince Fielder.

Brett Wallace doubled and Bill Hall was intentionally walked in the 10th before being knocked in by Quintero. Lyon came up next and redeemed himself with a double -- his first major-league hit -- that plated Quintero and made it a three-run ballgame.

"I was missing my spots tonight. I was having a tough time finding the strike zone early to get ahead of guys, and I wasn't able to do that and I made some bad pitches," said Green. "I threw a 3-1 slider over the middle of the plate. He hit it pretty good. It's tough to lose this way."

Lyon stayed in to pitch the 10th and earn the win by setting the Brewers down in order.

Brett Myers pitched 6 1/3 innings and allowed five runs on 10 hits and one walk with four strikeouts for Houston. Shaun Marcum went six innings and gave up four runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out eight for the Brewers.

Carlos Lee's two-run blast in the first got the scoring started. Wallace followed with a double and was brought home by Hall's single to give Houston an early three-run lead.

The Brewers got a run back in the second after Fielder led off the inning with a single that was mishandled by right fielder Hunter Pence, which allowed him to move to second. A Mark Kotsay single moved Fielder to third and he later scored on a sac fly by Yuniesky Betancourt.

Pence atoned for his mistake in the next inning with a solo home run that made the score 4-1.

Milwaukee answered with two runs in the third on a Braun groundout to bring in Craig Counsell and a Fielder single that scored Carlos Gomez to make it a one- run game.

Michael Bourn started a two-out rally in the seventh with a single that was followed by an Angel Sanchez RBI double. Pence kept it going with a single that scored Sanchez to make the score 6-3.

Milwaukee answered back, yet again, with a two-run home run by Braun in the bottom half of the seventh.

Milwaukee squandered a chance in the eighth that started with a Betancourt single and was followed by a Jonathan Lucroy bunt that led to an error on first baseman, Brett Wallace, as he was bumped into by reliever, Mark Melancon. The error allowed Betancourt to reach third and Lucroy to be safe at first without a throw.

Eric Almonte came up next and a bizarre play occurred. Almonte hit a grounder to third and Betancourt was caught in a run-down between third and home. Before he was tug out, he waved to Lucroy to take third, but Lucroy hesitated which resulted in him being caught in between bases himself. Lucroy was tagged and a throw almost got Almonte going back to first. Counsell came up next and grounded out to end the inning and the Brewers' chance at taking the lead.

"That was quite a game. There's no doubt about that. A lot of improbable things happened," said Astros manager, Brad Mills. "The eighth inning almost looked like a bomb went off in both halves of the inning. There were a lot of bodies out there."
