Young hits walkoff HR for Diamondbacks

Aug 12, 2011 - 5:44 AM Phoenix, AZ (Sports Network) - The Arizona Diamondbacks liked being in sole possession of first place so much they won when trailing after eight innings for just the second time this season.

Paul Goldschmidt's pinch-hit, two-run homer in the ninth inning sent the game to extras, where in the 10th Chris Young's three-run blast gave the Diamondbacks a dramatic 8-5 victory over the downtrodden Houston Astros.

J.J. Putz (2-2) hurled a perfect 10th to earn the win, Arizona's fourth in five games.

Houston's Brett Myers was in line for his first victory since June 17, but closer Mark Melancon couldn't hold a 5-3 cushion in the ninth. With one out, Xavier Nady beat out an infield single thanks to a rushed throw to bring the tying run to the plate.

Gerardo Parra looked at strike three for the second out before Goldschmidt, hitting in the pitcher's spot, annihilated a 2-2 offering off the facade in left field for his second career home run to tie the game.

Arizona, which was 1-48 when trailing after eight innings, got consecutive singles from Ryan Roberts and Justin Upton to start the 10th. Jeff Fulchino (1-4) was pulled in favor of Sergio Escalona, who recorded one out before serving up Young's no-doubter into the left-field seats.

"I didn't think about mechanics, I didn't think about my last few at-bats," said Young, who had not homered since July 2. "I just wanted to hit the ball hard."

The come-from-behind win puts the Diamondbacks a full game ahead of the idle Giants atop the NL West standings.

The combination of Jason Bourgeois and Jose Altuve, Houston's 1-2 hitters, went a combined 6-for-10 with four runs scored and an RBI. Carlos Lee and J.D. Martinez each drove in a pair for the Astros, who lost the final three meetings of the four-game set.

The Diamondbacks struggled to get anything going against Myers, while Houston had a decidedly easier time against Joe Saunders, who was knocked around for 11 hits and five runs over six frames.

"[Myers] battled through the whole game and really did a good job. He made some great pitches wen he had to," Astros manager Brad Mills said.

Lee, with two outs and down 0-2 in the count in the third inning, lined a base hit to left to knock in Altuve for the game's first run.

Saunders loaded the bases in the fifth, starting with an indefensible walk to Myers. With the bags full, Martinez doubled over the head of Parra in left to bring two across. Lee then boomeranged a line drive that took the glove off the Arizona starter. Saunders recovered the ball in time to get Lee at first, but Altuve scored to make it 4-0.

Another comebacker off a pitcher's glove produced a run in the bottom half, as Myers deflected Willie Bloomquist's liner into right field to plate Parra.

The duo of Bourgeois and Altuve padded the lead in the seventh. Upton misplayed a ball hit by Bourgeois for the second time in three innings, with the latter resulting in a triple. Altuve followed with an RBI single to left.

Myers was pulled with two outs in the eighth after giving up run-scoring hits to Roberts and Miguel Montero.
