Phils beat Brewers again on error in 10th

Sep 11, 2011 - 5:01 AM Milwaukee, WI (Sports Network) - LaTroy Hawkins' throwing error in the top of the 10th inning allowed Philadelphia to score the go-ahead run, as the Phillies took down the Milwaukee Brewers, 3-2, in the third test of a four- game series.

Hawkins (1-1) started on the mound for the Brewers in the 10th and Raul Ibanez led off with a double to right. Carlos Ruiz followed with a nice bunt that Hawkins picked up and threw wildly to first, allowing Ibanez to score. Hawkins retired the next three batters to keep it a 3-2 game.

Ryan Madson worked around a leadoff walk in the home 10th to give the Phillies their sixth straight victory. With the Braves losing to the Cardinals on Saturday, Philadelphia's magic number to win the NL East for a fifth straight year shrunk to seven.

Placido Polanco and Hunter Pence hit solo homers for the Phillies, who got another solid outing from Cliff Lee. The left-hander gave up two runs -- one earned -- on six hits over seven innings. He struck out seven and walked two.

"We won. That's all that matters," Lee said. "It's hard to complain when you win. The bullpen kept putting up zeros. Good teams get lucky a lot."

Yuniesky Betancourt and Casey McGehee each drove in a run for the Brewers, who have lost five in a row. Milwaukee's lead over St. Louis in the NL Central is down to six.

Ex-Phillie Randy Wolf allowed two runs on nine hits over a seven-inning start for the Brewers.

Pence's blast into the second deck in left gave the Phillies a 1-0 lead in the first inning.

The Brewers tied the game in the second on Betancourt's RBI single. Prince Fielder walked to start the frame. McGehee almost hit into a double play, but second baseman Michael Martinez's throw to first was off the mark. McGehee went to second on the play and knocked over catcher Ruiz on Betancourt's single to center. Lee's scoreless streak was stopped at 31 innings.

Philadelphia loaded the bases with two outs in the third, but John Mayberry Jr. struck out swinging.

Milwaukee went ahead in the fourth. Ryan Braun singled, moved to third on Fielder's bloop double down the left-field line and scored on McGehee's groundout.

Polanco's homer to left in the fifth made it a 2-2 game.

Brad Lidge and Michael Stutes (6-1) tossed a scoreless eighth and ninth, respectively, for the Phillies.

"They're down. I'm down," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said. "This is a hard one to lose."

The Phillies have won 10 of the past 13 games in this series...Lee, who hasn't lost since July 25, had a career-high 34-inning scoreless stretch earlier this year...The Phillies are a club-record 46 games over .500 this season (94-48)...Philadelphia manager Charlie Manuel earned his 638th victory with the Phillies. He is seven wins shy of Gene Mauch (645 wins from 1960-68) for first on the club's all-time list...Phillies shortstop Wilson Valdez left the game with an injured hamstring.
