Cards top Diamondbacks in last at-bat

Jul 10, 2011 - 4:46 AM St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) - Albert Pujols belted a game-tying, two-run homer in the eighth and pinch-hitter Tony Cruz drove home the winning run in the ninth, as the St. Louis Cardinals battled back to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks, 7-6, at Busch Stadium.

Trailing by three runs, the Cardinals tied the game in the eighth. Arizona committed a pair of errors in the inning, which led to Jon Jay scoring from third on a fly ball by Ryan Theriot.

The rally began with consecutive hits off Arizona reliever Yhency Brazoban. Right fielder Justin Upton misplayed a single by Skip Schumaker that put men on the corners before center fielder Chris Young dropped Theriot's fly ball on the transfer. Jay managed to beat the throw to the plate.

Brazoban responded by striking out David Freese on three pitches, but St. Louis pulled even at six when Pujols launched his 18th home run of the season, a blast over the left-field wall.

Lance Berkman singled to leadoff the ninth, but was erased on a fielder's choice. Yadier Molina then walked before Cruz lined a double off Joe Paterson (0-3) to the right-center field gap.

Pujols added an RBI single for the Cardinals, who had lost three in a row, including the first two tests of this four-game series.

St. Louis is tied with Milwaukee for first place in the National League Central with one game remaining before the All-Star break.

Chris Carpenter gave up five runs -- four earned -- on nine hits and four walks in his six-inning start for the Cardinals. Cruz's heroics made a winner out of Fernando Salas (5-2).

"We had a good, tough club on the other side, but we stayed after it," Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said. "It was a legitimate comeback."

Arizona starter Daniel Hudson allowed three runs -- two earned -- on eight hits and three walks in five-plus innings.

"We were just unable to close it out," Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said. "Give St. Louis credit. They extended [Hudson] very well."

St. Louis opened the scoring in the first. The Cardinals capitalized on a gaffe by Arizona third baseman Sean Burroughs, whose errant throw on a ground ball hit by Theriot put the leadoff batter on second. Theriot then moved to third on a flyout before scoring on a single to center by Pujols.

The Diamondbacks seized the lead in the next inning. Carpenter gave up back- to-back singles to begin the second and issued a one-out walk to Willie Bloomquist to load the bases. Carpenter then struck out Juan Miranda and needed only to retire his counterpart to escape unscathed. But Hudson delivered with two outs, helping his own cause with a single that got past center fielder Colby Rasmus. Hudson was credited with two RBI, while the error enabled Bloomquist to score as well.

Arizona extended its advantage to 5-1 with RBI doubles by Young and Kelly Johnson in the third and sixth innings.

Hudson was replaced by Sam Demel after loading the bases in the bottom of the sixth. Schumaker smacked Demel's first pitch into right field for an RBI single. The Cardinals then trimmed their deficit to 5-3 when Theriot grounded into a double play.

A run-scoring single by pinch-hitter Ryan Roberts put the D-Backs up 6-3 in the seventh.
