Diamondbacks pound Lilly, Dodgers
May 24, 2012 - 6:33 AM Phoenix, AZ (Sports Network) - Ryan Roberts drove in three runs, Justin Upton clubbed a two-run homer and the Arizona Diamondbacks pounded a previously unbeaten Ted Lilly and the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers, 11-4, in the finale of a three-game series at Chase Field.Jason Kubel and Aaron Hill had two RBI apiece for Arizona, which avoided being swept at home for a second time this season.
Hill and teammate Willie Bloomquist both finished with three hits.
Diamondbacks starter Joe Saunders (3-3) gave up four runs on seven hits with a walk and seven strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings.
"Offense was incredible, defense played good and I just tried to throw pitches and tried to make outs as quickly as I could," Saunders said.
Elian Herrera doubled twice and knocked in a run for the Dodgers, who were seeking a season-high seventh straight win.
Lilly (5-1) was victimized for eight runs on nine hits and five walks in 3 1/3 innings and suffered his first loss since September 12, 2011 against these same Diamondbacks. The veteran left-hander entered Wednesday's game with a 1.79 earned run average and had gone 8-0 in his last 10 outings.
The Diamondbacks scored at least one run in each of the first five innings.
"We could never really stop it," Los Angeles manager Don Mattingly said.
Roberts opened the scoring with a first-inning solo blast and made it 4-0 with a sacrifice fly in the second. A single by Gerardo Parra plated Paul Goldschmidt, giving Arizona five-run lead in the third.
A.J. Ellis took Saunders deep in the fourth, crushing a solo home run to center field, but the Diamondbacks extended their lead in the bottom of the frame on Kubel's two-run triple and Hill's second RBI single.
Arizona got three more runs in the fifth when Roberts scored Saunders with a groundout and Upton followed by launching his fifth home run of the season out to right.
The Dodgers pushed across three runs in the seventh after loading the bases with no outs. Ellis scored on a Dee Gordon groundout, James Loney stroked an RBI single and Adam Kennedy came home on a fielder's choice by Herrera.
