Kennedy pitches D'Backs over Giants
May 31, 2012 - 6:42 AMVideo
Kennedy (4-5) threw 78 of his 122 pitches for strikes and allowed just one run on five hits and two walks while striking out seven to secure the victory. David Hernandez got the final out of the eighth and worked around a leadoff single in the ninth to nail down his first save of the year.
Paul Goldschmidt clubbed a solo home run and added an RBI single, while Ryan Roberts also knocked in a run for the Diamondbacks, who snapped a two-game skid.
"[Kennedy] really battled for us. That's why he's the ace," Goldschmidt said.
Ryan Theriot went 2-for-4 and knocked in the only run of the night for the Giants, who had their three-game winning streak snapped.
Tim Lincecum (2-6) allowed two runs -- one earned -- on four hits over seven full frames. He struck out six, but issued five walks in the loss.
"He threw the ball well," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said of his starter's effort. "He should feel good about his outing, we just couldn't get any runs for him."
With the game tied at one in the sixth, Goldschmidt gave the Diamondbacks the lead for good when he waited back on a changeup from Lincecum and rocketed it over the left-field wall for his fourth homer of the season and a 2-1 edge.
Justin Upton worked a leadoff walk in the eighth and Miguel Montero followed with a base hit before Goldschmidt burned the Giants again with an RBI single up the middle off Steve Edlefsen. Montero made it to third on a double-play groundout by Chris Young and scored on a single by Roberts to account for the final margin.
Earlier, Arizona opened the scoring in the second inning. Montero began the frame with a double to deep center and moved to third on a groundout by Goldschmidt. Roberts then lofted a fly ball to Gregor Blanco in right. Blanco made the catch, but lost the ball on the transfer, which allowed Montero to score the game's first run.
The Giants knotted the game at one in the fourth when Blanco atoned for his earlier error by roping a triple into left and scoring on a base hit by Theriot.
