Chipper's five-hit night carries Braves over Cubs

Jul 4, 2012 - 4:44 AM Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Chipper Jones celebrated his eighth All-Star berth in a big way.

Jones, who was announced as Matt Kemp's replacement in the Midsummer Classic Tuesday, picked up his third career five-hit game and knocked in four runs in the Braves' 10-3 win over the Chicago Cubs.

"Just feel fortunate that I'm swinging the bat really good right now when the team needs it," Jones said.

Michael Bourn delivered a bases-clearing triple in the Braves' come-from- behind five-run fifth inning and scored three times in the second installment of this four-game set

Jair Jurrjens (2-2) picked up the win after allowing three unearned runs on nine hits in five innings. Jurrjens was sent to the minor leagues after struggling in his first four starts, when he started 0-2 with a 9.37 ERA. In three starts since being recalled on June 22, the 26-year-old right-hander is 2-0 with a 1.49 ERA.

Chris Volstad (0-7) was in line for his first win since July 10, 2011, but he imploded in the fifth. Volstad lasted 4 1/3 innings, allowing six runs on seven hits and two walks. He has lost 12 straight decisions.

"I just think it's me wanting to be a competitor," Volstad said. "I get runners on base and I'm trying to win the game, and we're ahead, and it's just bad thinking on my part. It's just a matter of me wanting to be perfect and I can't expect that of myself ... It's definitely a learning experience for sure."

The Braves turned the tide in the game in the fifth inning. Trailing 3-1, the first three hitters reached base with a pair of hits and a walk. Bourn then roped a line drive to right field, clearing the bases. After Martin Prado drove home Bourn with a sacrifice fly, Jason Heyward ended Volstad's night with a home run to left-center field to give Atlanta a three-run lead.

Atlanta blew the game open with four runs in the sixth. Cubs reliever Rafael Dolis walked three batters to load the bases before being replaced by Jairo Asencio, who walked Prado to force in a run. Two batters later, Jones laced a double to the right-field corner for a 10-3 lead.

Jones, who plans to retire after this season, lined a two-out single to right in the eighth inning. That finished off a perfect 5-for-5 game and he exited to a standing ovation.

"It was a lot of fun," Jones said. "Just another one to file in the memory bank from my last year. It's been pretty special up until this point. It's the first time I've gotten five hits at home. I've done it a couple of times on the road but first time I've done it here. Fans were into the game, fell behind early but started to swing the bats there in the 5th and 6th inning and the game is fun when you do that."

Kris Medlen pitched three perfect innings in relief of Jurrjens and Jonny Venters tossed the ninth.

Jones singled in Bourn to give the Braves a first-inning lead, but it did not hold.

The Cubs struck for three unearned runs in the third. David DeJesus picked up a one-out hit off the glove of Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman, who committed two errors in Monday's game. Dan Uggla, attempting to start a double play, then fired a throw into left field, scoring DeJesus and moving Castro to second. Anthony Rizzo then bounced a comebacker to Jurrjens, who caught Castro off the bag at second, but Castro avoided the tag and returned to the base. Two batters later, Bryan LaHair stroked a single to right to give the Cubs the lead and Steve Clevenger followed with another hit to plate a third run.
