Sale strikes out 15 as ChiSox nip Rays
May 29, 2012 - 4:41 AMVideo
Sale (6-2) gave up just three hits and walked two over 7 1/3 innings.
"He's special. I think that's what your seeing is him being able to manage the game and know when to go for the strikeout, get ahead and all those things," White Sox manager Robin Ventura said about Sale.
Adam Dunn hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the sixth for the White Sox, winners in six straight.
Addison Reed tossed a perfect ninth to secure his fifth save of the season.
Jose Lobaton had an RBI single and Ben Zobrist had two hits and scored the lone run for the Rays, who have dropped two of three overall.
Matt Moore (1-5) took the loss after giving up Dunn's homer. He allowed just four hits and struck out a career-high ten over seven frames.
Tampa Bay got on the board in the fourth on Lobaton's RBI single. Zobrist singled and stole second before scoring on Lobaton's base hit.
In the sixth, Gordon Beckham singled before Dunn clobbered a first pitch fastball off the scoreboard in right for his 16th homer of the season. It would be all the White Sox needed.
"That's where he likes the ball and I knew that," Moore said about his pitch to Dunn. "It was a mistake and that one wound up costing us tonight."
In the seventh, Lobaton walked, moved to second on an Elliot Johnson ground out and took third when Sales pitch got by A.J. Pierzynski. But Sales kept his composer and got Pena to ground out before he struck out Jose Molina to end the threat.
Jesse Crain took over for Sale with one out in the eighth and got Sean Rodriguez and B.J. Upton to fly out before Reed shut down Tampa Bay in the ninth.
Game Notes
Dunn hit his 12th homer in May...It was just the second time Sale has registered double-digit strike outs in one game.
