Fister twirls gem as Tigers down Tribe
Aug 5, 2012 - 3:50 AMVideo
Fister (6-7), who took a perfect game into the sixth inning, gave up one run on four hits. The right-hander had six strikeouts and no walks.
"I felt good," Fister said. "I felt strong through the end. I made some mistakes but the defense picked me up."
Omar Infante and Jhonny Peralta had two RBI apiece for the Tigers, who have won three in a row.
Ubaldo Jimenez (8-11) gave up six runs on seven hits over 5 1/3 innings to take the loss for the struggling Indians, who have dropped a season-high eight straight games.
The Tigers gave Fister all the support he would need in the second inning. Prince Fielder led off with a walk and scored on Brennan Boesch's triple to right-center field. Delmon Young followed with a sacrifice fly to make it a 2-0 game.
Detroit added three more runs in the fourth. Fielder got things started with a single, advanced to second on a wild pitch and moved to third on Boesch's groundout. Alex Avila walked prior to Peralta's two-run triple to right-center field. Infante added an RBI infield single to give the Tigers a 5-0 lead.
Meanwhile, Fister retired the first 17 batters that he faced. But with two outs in the sixth, Ezequiel Carrera hit a triple over the head of center fielder Austin Jackson.
"Fister usually pitches good against us," Indians manager Manny Acta said.
The Tigers tacked on another run in the bottom half of the frame. Esmil Rogers took over for Jimenez with runners on second and third. Infante's sacrifice fly gave the home team a six-run cushion.
Cleveland's second hit of the game came in the eighth, when Michael Brantley led off with a single.
The Indians finally got a run off Fister in the ninth. Carrera tripled to center and raced home on Jason Kipnis' grounder that deflected off Fister's glove. After Shin-Soo Choo hit a two-out double, Fister got Carlos Santana looking to end the game.
