Marlins hit 3 HRs, spoil Phils home opener

Apr 9, 2012 - 11:46 PM Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Omar Infante hit two of his club's three home runs, while Anibal Sanchez outdueled Cole Hamels, and the Miami Marlins put a damper on the Phillies' 2012 home opener with a 6-2 decision in the opener of a three-game set.

Sanchez (1-0) lasted 6 1/3 frames, allowing six hits and a pair of runs. Hamels (0-1), on the other hand, worked 5 1/3 innings, charged with eight hits and four runs despite fanning nine.

"I felt like my stuff was really good. Unfortunately there were a few pitches that got away. Even when you make a good pitch, the bat's gonna put it in play. It's a long season," Hamels said. "We have to go out and keep on battling. We have to fight through it."

Gaby Sanchez added two hits and two RBI. Austin Kearns also went deep for the Marlins, who had dropped three of four to start the year.

Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen was traveling to Miami after the game to address comments he made in a Time magazine piece regarding Fidel Castro. He was to speak on Tuesday during the off day in this series.

As for Monday's game, Guillen said his team did a good job against Hamels.

"He tried to stay away, but his change up was off," said Guillen. "We just got a couple good swings on him, especially Infante."

Freddy Galvis knocked in both runs for Philadelphia, the five-time defending NL East champs who lost two of three in Pittsburgh this past weekend.

Galvis snapped an 0-for-12 start to his MLB career with a one-out, two-run double in the home seventh which brought the hosts within 5-2, but Randy Choate entered for Sanchez and prevented further damage by getting pinch- hitter Ty Wigginton on strikes and inducing a liner from Juan Pierre.

Edward Mujica turned in a scoreless eighth and Kearns' leadoff blast to left made it a four-run contest in the ninth.

Steve Cishek finished off the triumph with a 1-2-3 bottom half.

"What it comes down to is, we're not hitting the ball hard enough to score runs," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said.

Miami picked up a run in the first as a Hanley Ramirez grounder scored Jose Reyes, who led off with a single, moved to second on an Emilio Bonifacio base hit and then stole third.

It was 2-0 for the visitors in the fourth as Ramirez hit a leadoff double and scored when Sanchez followed with a base hit.

Infante's leadoff shot in the fifth pushed the margin to three, and a Sanchez RBI double made it 4-0 in the sixth to chase Hamels.

Infante added his second leadoff blast against Joe Savery in the seventh.

Game Notes

The Phillies put together an NL-best 33-18 record in day games in 2011, including a 17-6 mark at home...Coming in, Hamels had been 4-0 with a 1.90 earned run average in his last six starts vs. the Marlins...Sanchez was 3-8 with a 5.08 ERA in 17 previous starts vs. the Phils...Miami left fielder Giancarlo Stanton was a late scratch in favor of Chris Coghlan...Philadelphia fell to 3-6 all-time in Citizens Bank Park home openers.
