Zambrano does it all as Marlins top Phillies
Jun 3, 2012 - 11:10 PMVideo
Zambrano (4-3) allowed one run on four hits and two walks with seven strikeouts through 7 2/3 innings in Miami's seventh win in nine games.
"Today he was very effective. He threw a lot of strikes," Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen said about Zambrano. "And at the plate, this kid was not a Silver Slugger a couple times ... for no reason. This guy is a good hitter."
Jose Reyes had a two-run double while Hanley Ramirez homered in the victory.
Joe Blanton (4-6) was touched for five runs on nine hits and a walk in six- plus innings for the Phillies, who dropped the last two portions of this three-game set.
Zambrano stranded a baserunner on second base in the first two innings on the mound before helping his own cause at the plate in the third with a leadoff blast into the left-center field bleachers.
It was Zambrano's 24th career home run.
Ramirez then led off the fourth with a homer to left, giving Miami a 2-0 advantage.
The Marlins added to their lead in the seventh after loading the bases on a John Buck walk, a Chris Coghlan base hit and Zambrano's bunt single.
Reyes stepped up next and sent a double into the right-center field gap to bring home Buck and Coghlan, knocking Blanton out of the game.
Chad Qualls entered next and allowed just one run when Zambrano crossed the plate on a wild pitch to make it a 5-0 game before Reyes was thrown out at home on a Ramirez grounder to shortstop.
The Phillies were able to get on the board in the eighth inning on Juan Pierre's RBI single that scored Brian Schneider, but they would get no closer as Heath Bell entered the game with runners on first and second with one out in the ninth and recorded the final two outs to earn his 12th save of the season.
"When we get down four, five, six runs, it's hard to come back," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said.
