Phillies come from behind again to sweep Brewers

Jul 26, 2012 - 2:38 AM Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - It was the first three-game sweep of the season for the Phillies, and the win in the finale came in familiar fashion.

After blowing a four-run lead and trailing by one entering the 10th, Carlos Ruiz tied the game with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning and Jimmy Rollins followed with an RBI single as Philadelphia took a 7-6 win over the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday.

"We had a rough game out there today, but we stuck with it," said Phillies manager Charlie Manuel. "It looks like things are starting to turn around for us here."

All three games of this series were won late by the Phillies as they scored six runs in the eighth for a 7-6 win on Tuesday and used a four-run ninth on Monday gave them another 7-6 win.

Philadelphia made some big news early on Wednesday by signing star pitcher Cole Hamels to a six-year, $144 million deal. It made the 28-year-old lefty the second-highest paid pitcher in the game, behind only CC Sabathia of the New York Yankees.

Chase Utley went 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored while Erik Kratz had his first-ever three-hit game with an RBI and a run scored for the Phillies, who have won four straight.

Ryan Braun went 3-for-4 with a two-run home run while Rickie Weeks was 4-for-4 with a solo homer for the Brewers, who have dropped a season-high six straight.

"We did a nice job of battling offensively," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said. "We had some other opportunities and didn't get it done again. Same thing, good ball game, didn't finish."

Neither starter factored into the decision as Milwaukee's Marco Estrado was pulled after four innings as he was tagged for five runs on eight hits. Vance Worley went 5 1/3 innings and gave up three runs on 10 hits.

In the top of the 10th with Michael Schwimer (2-1) on the mound, Carlos Gomez got to second base to start the inning after Ty Wigginton failed to catch a high pop up. A sacrifice bunt from Cesar Izturis moved Gomez to third and he scored after an intentional walk to Braun when Aramis Ramirez hit a fly to shallow right that saw Utley make a nice grab.

Francisco Rodriguez (2-6) came on to close the game and got the first out, but John Mayberry worked a walk. Kratz then ripped a double down the left-field line and was lifted for pinch-runner Mike Fontenot. Ruiz was able to tie the game with a sac fly to center and Rollins won it with his single to right- center.

The Brewers struck first in the game as consecutive leadoff singles from Corey Hart and Weeks in the second inning were followed by a Martin Maldonado single to right for a 1-0 lead. Worley was able to work out of the jam by retiring the next three batters.

Philadelphia answered in the bottom of the second as Juan Pierre hit a two-out double and Kratz followed with a single to left to tie the game.

The Phillies then went on top in the third. Shane Victorino singled to leadoff the frame and Utley scored him with a double to center. Utley moved to third on a Ryan Howard groundout and came home on Hunter Pence's bloop single to right for a 3-1 lead.

The Phillies added two more runs in the fourth as Utley doubled home Kratz and Victorino, who reached base on a double and walk, respectively, for a 5-1 advantage.

Worley pitched around trouble the whole game, but it finally caught up to him in the sixth. Weeks led off the inning with his 10th homer of the year. After Maldonado struck out, Cody Ransom doubled and Travis Ishikawa reached base on an infield single. Gomez then lofted a fly ball to left that went off the glove of a diving Pierre, going for a double and scoring one to make it a 5-3 game.

Kyle Kendrick then came out of the bullpen and got Nyjer Morgan to fly out. After an intentional walk to Braun, a flyout from Ramirez ended the inning.

Kendrick worked around a one-out single from Weeks in the seventh to keep it a two-run game, but Antonio Bastardo didn't fare as well in the eighth.

He got the first out of the inning, but Gomez followed with a single. After pinch-hitter Jeff Bianchi flied out, Braun drilled a pitch easily over the left-field wall to tie the game.
