Hundley drives in four as Padres best Phillies

Apr 23, 2012 - 1:56 AM San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - Nick Hundley smacked a two-run home run, drove in four runs and scored twice as the San Diego Padres won back-to-back games for the first time this season with a 6-1 decision over the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday.

Anthony Bass (1-2) fanned seven and allowed one unearned run on three hits and five walks in six innings for the Padres, who split the four-game set with Philadelphia.

"To win the past couple games yesterday and today is big, we kind of have the momentum back on our side," Bass said.

Carlos Ruiz scored the lone run for the Phillies, who have plated two or fewer runs in 10 of 16 games this season. They were 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position and left 10 men on base.

Philadelphia, which has scored 43 runs through 16 games, totaled 43 runs through its first six contests a year ago.

"I see guys trying too hard. They just need to relax and play like we can," Philadelphia manager Charlie Manuel said.

Joe Blanton (1-3) gave up six runs -- three earned -- on seven hits and two walks.

The Padres struck first with two runs in the home first. Will Venable led off with a bunt single and Mark Kotsay reached on Blanton's fielding error. Chase Headley then lined a double over the head of Hunter Pence in right field to bring home Venable. Kotsay scored on Hundley's sacrifice fly to center field.

Philadelphia got a run back in the second. Carlos Ruiz singled to center field and two batters later, Juan Pierre singled through the hole on the right side. Ruiz, who initially held up at third, came home when Venable bobbled the ball in right field.

But San Diego blew the game open with two runs in each half of the third and fifth frames.

In the third, Headley worked a two-out walk and scored on Hundley's line-drive triple, which got past a diving Pence in right field. Hundley came home when Jim Thome committed a throwing error to first after fielding a ground ball.

Hundley belted a two-run homer to left-center field to make it 6-1 after five.
