Gee sparkles, Mets rout Padres
May 26, 2012 - 4:27 AMVideo
Gee (4-3) scattered four hits and three walks while striking out a career-high nine batters in New York's fourth win in six games.
"Strikeouts a lot of time are just a matter of luck," Gee said. "Obviously you make some good pitches you get some strikeouts. Nine for me, that's a lot. It's just one of those nights I guess where they're missing some good pitches."
Lucas Duda had a home run and scored twice, and Ike Davis added two RBI for the Mets.
Anthony Bass (2-5) allowed six runs on eight hits and three walks in 5 1/3 innings to suffer the loss.
Jesus Guzman knocked in the lone run for the Padres, who dropped their fourth decision in five games.
The Padres jumped out to the early advantage when Will Venable opened the game with a walk, moved to third on Yonder Alonso's bloop single and came home on Guzman's sacrifice fly to left field.
But New York answered in the second inning with Duda's leadoff blast off the base of the upper deck in right field and then took the lead in the third on back-to-back one-out doubles by Gee and Mike Baxter.
Kirk Nieuwenhuis followed with a base hit to right to plate Baxter and give the Mets a 3-1 edge.
After San Diego failed to cut into its deficit by stranding a man on second in the top of the fifth inning, the Mets added to their lead in the bottom of the frame. Nieuwenhuis singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch, moved to third on David Wright's fly out to center field and came home on a Daniel Murphy double into the left-field corner.
Duda, who walked prior to Murphy's two-bagger, and Murphy both came home when the next batter on Davis singled to center field, stretching the Mets' advantage to 6-1.
"As the game went on, a couple of balls that were left over the plate, they capitalized," Padres manager Bud Black said. "Conversely, we had some guys on base and couldn't capitalize."
Gee then stranded a man on second in the seventh inning before Time Byrdak and Ramon Ramirez each faced the minimum in an inning of relief to close out the game for New York.
