Sabathia, Yankees shut out Tigers

Sabathia (1-1) turned in seven stellar innings. The left-hander held the Tigers to four singles, walked three and struck out four.
"CC really has a lot of pride in what he does and understands the ace role and that we needed to win a game today," said Yankees manager Joe Girardi.
Jayson Nix hit a two-run homer for New York, while Francisco Cervelli and Kevin Youkilis also knocked in two runs apiece.
Verlander (1-1) tossed 7 1/3 innings against the Yankees, with his lone hiccup coming in a three-run second.
The frame began with Verlander issuing a leadoff walk to Vernon Wells, who was erased on a fielder' choice. Cervelli then doubled home Ichiro Suzuki and scored on Nix's two-out blast to left field.
"(Verlander) gave us a chance. We just didn't do much with CC today," said Tigers manager Jim Leyland.
Detroit's No. 1 and 2 hitters, Austin Jackson and Torii Hunter each reached base two times, but the trio of Miguel Cabrera, Prince Fielder and Victor Martinez went a combined 1-for-12.
With Verlander out of the game, New York victimized Detroit's bullpen for four runs.
Phil Coke succeeded Verlander in the eighth and gave up hits to the first two batters he faced. Travis Hafner singled and Wells ripped a ball down the left- field line that resulted in a ground-rule double because of fan interference.
Suzuki's sacrifice fly plated pinch-runner Eduardo Nunez and Cervelli followed with a run-scoring single.
Youkilis singled home a pair in the ninth against Octavio Dotel.
Game Notes
Detroit hasn't posted a three-game home sweep of the Yankees since May 12-14, 2000 ... Verlander had won each of his previous seven decisions at home ... Before his home run off Verlander, Nix had been 1-for-11 with five strikeouts vs. the Detroit right-hander ... Suzuki snapped an 0-for-14 at the plate with an infield single in the sixth.
