Tigers get best of Braves once more

Apr 27, 2013 - 11:58 PM Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Omar Infante finished with three hits, including a two-run homer, and drove in three runs as Detroit claimed a 7-4 victory over Atlanta in the second of a three-game Interleague set at Comerica Park.

Jhonny Peralta added a two-run blast and Miguel Cabrera posted two hits and two RBI for the Tigers, who have won the first two in the series and three of four overall.

Rick Porcello (1-2) gave up three runs on five hits with five strikeouts and two walks in 6 1/3 innings. Jose Valverde tossed a perfect ninth for his second save.

"If we can keep them in the ballpark, then we've got a shot to win," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "They live and die with that home run ball quite a bit. "Ricky was a pretty good matchup, because he can keep the ball on the ground, and he did that for the most part."

Justin Upton homered and knocked in two runs for the Braves, who received two hits and an RBI from Freddie Freeman in their third straight defeat.

Kris Medlen (1-3) was torched for 10 hits and five runs over 5 1/3 frames.

Upton's solo shot in the eighth brought the Braves within 5-4, but the Tigers responded with Infante's run-scoring double with one out and Cabrera's RBI single with two down to provide some insurance.

Valverde ended the contest by retiring the side in order, the final two by strikeout.

In the home second, Victor Martinez reached with a one-out single and Peralta followed with a two-run blast.

Atlanta struck with three in the third on a bases-loaded walk to Dan Uggla, an Upton fielder's choice and a Freeman RBI single.

Austin Jackson and Torii Hunter singled with one down in the home third, and an infield hit from Cabrera plated Jackson for a 3-3 game.

In the fourth, Alex Avila walked with two down and Infante's homer -- his first of the season -- put the hosts ahead 5-3.

"We got aggressive on him and didn't get our pitches to hit. Sometimes that happens," Upton said of the Braves' faulty approach. "We felt like we're about to break through and put some runs on the board. It didn't work out in our favor."

Game Notes

Detroit has won three in a row and six of the last eight meetings with Atlanta since 2007 ... Upton's homer was his 12th, tops in the majors ... Infante's three hits tied a season high, first accomplished on April 24 against Kansas City, and his homer was his first to leave the ballpark since Sept. 28, 2012 at Minnesota.
