Royals edge ChiSox on Gordon's 10th-inning hit
May 5, 2013 - 10:52 PMVideo
With two outs and the bases loaded, Gordon took the first pitch off Brian Omogrosso (0-1) and ripped it deep into right, scoring Lorenzo Cain and giving his team the victory.
Gordon and Billy Butler had two RBI apiece, while Alcides Escobar and Miguel Tejada each drove in one run to help the Royals even the series.
"A lot of guys came up big -- Billy (Butler) with that huge ninth-inning double against their close -- that was big for us," said Gordon. "It was a good fought game, back and forth, and we kept battling and came out on top."
Kansas City starter Wade Davis allowed just one run on five hits and three walks, but needed 102 pitches in his six-inning outing. Greg Holland (1-1) pitched a perfect top of the 10th to pick up the win.
Alejandro De Aza had a two-run double for Chicago in the seventh inning and later scored on a wild pitch, while Alex Rios knocked a solo homer and also drove in two runs for the White Sox, who saw starter Jose Quintana give up three runs on six hits and two walks over five frames.
Rios got the White Sox on the board in the third. With the bases loaded, Rios grounded into a fielder's choice to third, but was able to bring DeWayne Wise home.
In the fifth, Mike Moustakas singled with one out, Jeff Francoeur doubled and Salvador Perez walked to load the bases. Miguel Tejada hit a blooper into left to score Moustakas. Franceour scored on an error by Jeff Keppinger and Perez reached home on an Escobar single.
The White Sox answered back in the seventh. Davis gave up back-to-back singles to Hector Gimenez and Wise, then De Aza doubled, scoring both runners to make it 3-3.
Aaron Crow relieved Tim Collins, but with Rios batting, Crow threw a wild pitch, allowing De Aza to run home, giving the White Sox a 4-3 lead. Four pitches later, Rios homered to give Chicago a 5-3 lead.
Salvador Perez drew a walk to lead off the ninth. Chris Getz pinch-ran for Perez and advanced to second on a wild pitch thrown by Addison Reed. George Kottaras was walked afterwards. Reed got Gordon and Escobar to fly out, but surrendered a double to Butler, who smacked it to deep right, scoring both Getz and Kottaras, sending the game into extra innings.
"I just was wild," said Reed. "I couldn't get comfortable out there. I walked the first two guys and I was just all over the place. I was missing spots big time. It wasn't even close. Then I kind of got into rhythm and that 3-2 pitch to Butler was a hanging slider. A terrible pitch."
Cain singled to start the tenth and later stole second. Getz was intentionally walked and Kottaras also walked, loading the bases and setting up Gordon's game-winning hit.
Game Notes
Gordon was just 1-for-6 with two strikeouts ... Cain is 8-for-18 over the last four games and leads Kansas City with a .341 batting average this season ... Tejada was 2-for-3. He is hitting .313 this season ... The Royals have won 13 of 17 against the White Sox at home.
