White Sox rally past Angels
May 17, 2013 - 6:00 AM Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - The Chicago White Sox rallied for three runs in the eighth inning to edge the LA Angels on Anaheim 5-4 in the opener of a four-game set at Angels Stadium.Alejandro De Aza singled then moved to third on an Alexei Ramirez base hit. Alex Rios went down swinging but a wild pitch allowed De Aza to score. Adam Dunn's single pushed Ramirez across, to chase Dane De La Rosa (1-1) from the game.
"Everybody battled. We came back and kept grinding. We took advantage of the situation," said Chicago manager Robin Ventura.
The Halos turned to Michael Kohn who didn't fair much better. Kohn issued three straight walks, including a free pass to Jeff Keppinger with the bases loaded, to force in the winning run.
The Angels put a runner on third with two outs in the home half, but Keppinger made a diving stop on a Howie Kendrick grounder up the middle and fired to first to end the threat.
Addison Reed worked a perfect ninth to pick up his 13th save of the season.
Matt Lindstrom (2-2) got the final out of the seventh inning to earn the win. Starter Jose Quintana gave up four runs on six hits over 6 2/3 innings.
The Angels had an opportunity to score in the third inning. With Chris Iannetta on second and two outs, Erick Aybar laced a single to right field. Iannetta hustled around third and raced for home, but Rios delivered a strike to the plate to catch Iannetta as he was sliding to the plate.
LA starter Jerome Williams, who gave up two runs on five hits over six-plus innings, kept the Chicago hitters at-bay until Rios got the White Sox on the board in the fourth inning with a towering homer into the seats in left field.
"I felt good, I felt strong, but that was (Scioscia's) decision to take me out. Our bullpen is good, but it frustrating to see that happen," Williams said.
The Angels, though, came back with two runs in the home half to take the lead. Mike Trout worked a leadoff walk and Albert Pujols followed two-run shot to right-center field. It was his seventh homer of the season.
The White Sox tied the game in the fifth and Conor Gillaspie crossed the plate on an Aybar fielder error, but the Halos added two more in the sixth inning to go up 4-2.
Mark Trumbo walked and Josh Hamilton singled to put two on with one out. Kendrick followed with a double to left to clear the bases. Kendrick lifted a fly ball deep to the left field. Viciedo chased it down and was able to get a glove on it, but couldn't haul the ball in allowing both runners to score.
