Sale, White Sox shut out Angels
May 18, 2013 - 5:35 AM Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - Chris Sale didn't flirt with a no-hitter this time, but again sailed along against the LA Angels of Anaheim.Sale followed his one-hitter and first career shutout against the Angels last Sunday by blanking them for 7 2/3 innings in this one, and the Chicago White Sox picked up a 3-0 win in the second test of a four-game set.
"To come back against a lineup like that in a week proves how good he is," White Sox manager Robin Ventura said of Sale. "This is the best two games in a week he's pitched."
Sale (5-2) had his perfect game broken up by Mike Trout with one out in the seventh inning in his last outing. The southpaw, who extended his scoreless inning streak to 23, fanned 12 and surrendered just three hits and three walks to pick up the win.
"He has good movement and threw the ball hard. We didn't get many good looks tonight," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said of Sale.
Alex Rios and Adam Dunn smacked solo homers for Chicago, which has won a season-high four consecutive tilts.
Addison Reed fired a 1-2-3 ninth to notch his 14th save of the year.
C.J. Wilson (3-3), who matched zeroes with Sale for six innings before giving up three in the seventh Sunday, was again the hard-luck loser. He allowed two runs on six hits and two walks over seven frames for the Angels, who have dropped five of their last six games.
The White Sox pushed across a run in the first, seventh and ninth.
Rios extended his hitting streak to 12 games in the opening frame when he launched a two-out solo shot into the rock pile in left center.
Dayan Viciedo had a one-out single to center in the seventh, advanced to second on Jeff Keppinger's groundout and scored when Conor Gillaspie slapped a single to center.
Dunn scalded a one-out liner over the wall in left in the ninth to increase Chicago's margin to 3-0.
Trout reached third in the first, but the Angels only got a runner to second one other time in the contest.
Game Notes
Sale is 10-0 lifetime against the AL West ... Rios and Viciedo both had two hits ... Chicago was 1-for-4 with runners in scoring position, while the Angels were 0-for-3 with RISP.
