Bonderman helps Mariners beat Yankees
Jun 8, 2013 - 5:59 AM Seattle, WA (Sports Network) - Brendan Ryan and Jason Bay each stroked two-run singles as part of a four-run fourth inning that lifted the Seattle Mariners over the New York Yankees, 4-1, Friday in the second tilt of a four-game series at Safeco Field. The fourth-inning outburst provided more than enough run support to help Jeremy Bonderman (1-1) earn his first win since 2010, with the veteran right- hander yielding just one run on three hits and a walk over six solid frames.
Tom Wilhelmsen spun a scoreless ninth to notch his 15th save.
Bay and Nick Franklin each finished with two hits for the Mariners, who have won three of their last five, despite dropping Thursday's series opener.
Travis Hafner knocked in the lone New York run, while starter Hiroki Kuroda (6-5) was tagged for four runs on eight hits and three walks over 6 1/3 innings for the Yankees, who had a four-game win streak halted.
"It seemed like he lost his strike slider," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said of Kuroda. "His command is usually really good but he was having a hard time with his slider there."
Before his Mariner debut on June 2 of this season, Bonderman had gone 975 days since his last start with Detroit in 2010, due in large part to Tommy John surgery in April of 2012.
Bonderman was unable to shake off the rust in his first start, giving up seven runs on nine hits over 4 2/3 innings against Minnesota, but responded effectively against the Yankees on Friday.
New York got to the right-hander in the first, as Brett Gardner clubbed a leadoff double, moved to third on a groundout and scored on Hafner's groundball to second to make it 1-0.
Bonderman settled in from there, yielding just two hits over the next five frames to keep his team in the contest.
"I think he needed to get comfortable out there," Seattle manager Eric Wedge said of Bonderman. "He had to work there early on but got through it rather unscathed and went from there."
Seattle's offense did all its damage with two outs in the fourth, which Michael Morse kept alive with a two-out, ground-rule double.
Franklin and Kelly Shoppach worked back-to-back walks before Ryan singled to right to score Morse and Franklin for a 2-1 lead.
After Endy Chavez loaded the bases with a single, Bay brought home a pair with a base hit to left to make it 4-1.
Seattle's bullpen held the Yankees to just one hit over the final three frames, with Wilhelmsen working around a two-out double in the ninth to secure the win.
Game Notes
Bonderman spent the first eight years of his career with the Tigers and went 67-77 with a 4.89 ERA in 207 games, including 193 starts ... New York third baseman Kevin Youkilis doubled in the ninth and has reached base safely in all 20 games he has started at Safeco Field ... New York went 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position and left five on base.
