White Sox rough up Guthrie, Royals

Jun 22, 2013 - 4:31 AM Kansas City, MO (Sports Network) - Hector Santiago worked eight innings of one-run ball as the Chicago White Sox cruised to a 9-1 win over the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium.

Santiago (3-5) allowed just three hits, including an Eric Hosmer homer, and struck out five to earn his second win in three starts.

"That first inning you want to go out there and get a zero. You've got a lead and it was nice," said Santiago. "Right from the second inning on, I said, 'All right guys, I'm going let them hit it.' I'm throwing strikes and getting ahead in the count."

Dayan Viciedo hit a three-run homer and Alejandro De Aza added a two-run blast for the White Sox, who won for just the second time in nine games.

Kansas City starter Jeremy Guthrie (7-5), who lasted just 2 1/3 innings, was tagged for six runs on five hits to absorb his second straight loss.

"I just couldn't find the strike zone and created a mess in the first inning. A bunch of base hits in the third as well," Guthrie said.

Chicago scored two runs in the first inning to take an early lead. With the bases loaded, Paul Konerko walked to force home Alexei Ramirez. Conor Gillaspie followed with a sacrifice fly to right field to chase home Alex Rios.

The White Sox added five more in the third inning to break the game open. Ramirez led off with a single, then scored on Rios' double to left field.

Adam Dunn followed with a base hit to left to score Rios. Gillaspie singled two batters later before Viciedo smacked a three-run shot over the wall in left field to give Chicago a 7-0 lead.

De Aza went deep in the sixth to make it 9-0, and Hosmer clubbed his homer in the bottom half to account for the Royals' lone run.
