Marcum gets first win, Mets blank White Sox
Jun 27, 2013 - 3:14 AM Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Shaun Marcum threw eight shutout innings and earned his first win of the 2013 season, as the New York Mets blanked the Chicago White Sox, 3-0, in the second and final contest of a two-game set at U.S. Cellular Field. The 31-year-old Marcum (1-9), who signed a one-year, $4 million deal with the Mets this offseason, allowed just four hits and two walks in his outing, and avoided being the first Mets pitcher to start a season 0-10 since Anthony Young in 1993.
"It's huge," said Mets manager Terry Collins. "Everybody's got pride in the big leagues. Nobody likes to look at a zero in the win column. He knows and we know that doesn't belong there. I think this is a big kickstart for Shaun."
Eric Young went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Juan Lagares also drove in one run in the victory.
Chicago starter John Danks (1-5) gave up all three runs -- one earned -- on seven hits while striking out seven over 7 1/3 innings.
"I wish we knew what we could do differently," said Danks. "Each night, it's something different. We're good enought to compete ... but we just haven't done enough to compete as a group. We're way too talented to be where we are right now."
Neither team mustered much offense through the first four innings, combining for three hits.
The Mets opened up the scoring in the fifth. Josh Satin hit a leadoff single and Andrew Brown singled to left-center field two batters later. Both runners scored after Lagares hit a line drive towards Chicago shortstop Alexei Ramirez, who was unable to make a grab.
Lagares advanced to third after a ground out by Omar Quintanilla and scored on Young's infield single.
Marcum gave up a single in the fifth and sixth innings, but that would be it for Chicago's offense, as he retired the final seven batters.
Bobby Parnell pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for the Mets to notch his 13th save.
Game Notes
Ramirez went 2-for-4 with a stolen base ... Chicago reliever Nate Jones threw 1 2/3 innings of relief. He has allowed one earned run in 13 innings over his last 10 appearances ... The White Sox have scored one run or fewer in five of Danks' seven starts ... David Wright went 0-for-4, ending a seven-game hitting streak ... Parnell has given up just one hit in his last six outings.
