Goldschmidt's game-winning hit lifts D'Backs over Dodgers
Apr 15, 2013 - 12:28 AM Phoenix, AZ (Sports Network) - Paul Goldschmidt smacked a one-out single through the right side in the bottom of the ninth to give the Arizona Diamondbacks a 1-0 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday in the rubber match of a three-game set.Goldschmidt, who finished with two of his team's six hits, plated A.J. Pollock with the game-winning run after the center fielder hit a double to center.
"He (Los Angeles starter Josh Beckett) made a good pitch and I just hit it through the hole," Goldschmidt said. "Sometimes that's just the luck you get."
Arizona, winners in three of its last four, got a solid outing from starter Trevor Cahill, who lasted 7 1/3 scoreless innings and allowed six hits while striking out four. J.J. Putz (1-0) picked up the win after tossing a scoreless top of the ninth.
Adrian Gonzalez went 3-for-4 with a double to pace Los Angeles, which dropped two of three to lose the series. Beckett (0-2) gave up six hits and struck out nine over 8 1/3 innings, but gave up the critical game-winning run.
"I felt like I threw the ball pretty good," Beckett said. "I had some good plays made behind me. Matt (Dodgers center fielder Matt Kemp) made some unbelievable plays. He makes them look easier than they are."
Pollock entered the game in the fourth after replacing second baseman Aaron Hill, who left with a sore left wrist. His double with one down in the final frame proved to be one of the few mistakes Beckett made.
Goldschmidt, who has successfully reached base in the team's first 12 games of the season, came through with a soft liner that poked through the hole, allowing the winning run to score.
It was a pitching duel throughout with neither team challenging the other offensively. In the fifth, though, Cahill hit a fly ball to center that moved Cliff Pennington to third with two outs. Gerardo Parra ended the inning with a groundout just a couple pitches later.
Cahill got through the top of the seventh despite his growing pitch count and giving up leadoff double to Gonzalez. He retired the next three batters with a lineout, flyout and groundout, respectively, to stay alive.
In the eighth, Nick Punto singled to right and Beckett moved him to second base with a sacrifice bunt. It was the last batter faced by Cahill.
Arizona's bullpen came through, though. Lefty Tony Sipp got Carl Crawford to ground out, then Brad Ziegler entered the game and forced Mark Ellis to ground out to third, ending the inning and the threat.
