Diamondbacks edge Phillies on Montero's homer
May 11, 2013 - 7:02 AM Phoenix, AZ (Sports Network) - Miguel Montero clubbed a go-ahead solo homer in the eighth inning to lift the Arizona Diamondbacks past the Philadelphia Phillies, 3-2, in the second of a four-game set at Chase Field.Montero, who entered the game 3-for-7 all-time against Phillies reliever Mike Adams (1-3), turned on a first-pitch changeup and crushed it off the foul pole in right field to give the Diamondbacks the decisive 3-2 lead.
"It feels great to help the team. I've been disappointed with myself. I know it is early, but I've had so many opportunities and just haven't gotten it done," Montero said.
Eric Chavez and Martin Prado also drove in one run apiece for Arizona, which saw starter Ian Kennedy give up two runs on six hits over seven innings.
Tony Sipp (2-1) recorded the final two outs of the top of the eighth to earn the win, while David Hernandez stranded runners on second and third in the ninth to pick up his first save of the season.
Jimmy Rollins homered and Domonic Brown also drove in a run for Philadelphia, which has dropped three straight one-run games.
Phillies pitcher Tyler Cloyd, making his first start of the season, gave up two runs on two hits and three walks in 6 1/3 innings. Cloyd was recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Friday to replace Roy Halladay in the Phillies' rotation.
Halladay was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right shoulder injury earlier this week.
Rollins opened the game with a homer and Brown singled home Michael Young to give the Phillies a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
Chavez's double in the home half scored Paul Goldschmidt to pull the D'backs within 2-1.
Following Chavez's hit, Cloyd retired 15 of the next 18 batters he faced before giving up a one-out single to Cody Ross in the bottom of the seventh, which spelled the end of his night. Reliever Antonio Bastardo got Jason Kubel to fly out to center, but the ball was deep enough to allow Ross to move to second. Prado followed with a base hit to right to score Ross and tie the game.
The Phillies put runners on second and third with one out in the ninth inning, but Hernandez got pinch-hitter Laynce Nix to pop out before Rollins grounded out to first to end the game.
"We broke through, but we made some mistakes at the same time. We just didn't capitalize on our opportunities," said Phillies manager Charlie Manuel.
Game Notes
D'backs shortstop Didi Gregorius went 0-for-4 and failed to record a hit for the just the second time in 13 games this season ... Kennedy hasn't earned a win since April 1 ... The Phillies are 8-11 on the road this season ... Philadelphia leads the all-time series by a slim 53-52 margin.
