Rollins, Lee lift Phils over D'backs
May 12, 2013 - 5:44 AM Phoenix, AZ (Sports Network) - Jimmy Rollins accounted for two of the three Philadelphia runs and Cliff Lee pitched seven stellar innings as the Phillies edged the Arizona Diamondbacks, 3-1, at Chase Field.Rollins delivered the game's first run on a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning and provided some insurance in the seventh with a single up the middle. Ben Revere went 2-for-3 and scored twice while Lee laid down three sacrifice bunts, the first Phillies pitcher to accomplish such a feat since Chad Ogea in 1999.
Lee (4-2) tossed seven scoreless and struck out three but was lifted after throwing 114 pitches, 78 of which went for strikes. Jonathan Papelbon entered with one gone in the eighth and recorded his sixth save of the season.
"[Lee] pitched great, that's not the last game he's going to throw that way, he's thrown a lot like that before," Arizona manager Kirk Gibson said. "He had total command of the strike zone, threw the ball wherever he wanted to, in or out, up or down. It was just a great job by him."
Trevor Cahill (2-4) yielded just one run on three hits but walked five in five innings of work.
After four scoreless innings, Rollins put the visiting Phillies on the board with his sac fly to deep center field. Revere worked a walk, advanced to second on Lee's sac bunt, and took third on a Cahill wild pitch.
Rollins extended Philadelphia's lead two frames later, once again plating Revere after a single and Lee sacrifice, this time on a single to right.
"I usually have success when I get runners on. Not so much yet this year," Rollins said. "Tonight I did what was needed. I was put in a good position and I got a sac fly and a single."
Dominic Brown provided the third run in the eighth, plating Michael Young with a single to center. Carlos Ruiz followed with a single off Will Harris to load the bases, but pinch-hitter Laynce Nix struck out looking.
Antonio Bastardo started the eighth for the Phillies but walked A.J. Pollock and surrendered a one-out single to Paul Goldschmidt, putting runners on the corners. Papelbon then relieved Bastardo and allowed a sac fly to Cody Ross for the lone Arizona run but struck out Miguel Montero to end the threat.
Papelbon put two on in the ninth but fanned pinch-hitter Eric Hinske and Pollock to earn his first save of more than one inning this season and 36th of his career.
