Arroyo shines as Reds rout Phillies

May 19, 2013 - 5:46 AM Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Bronson Arroyo tossed 7 2/3 scoreless innings and struck out six as the Cincinnati Reds blanked the Philadelphia Phillies, 10-0, in the second of a three-game set from Citizens Bank Park.

The Reds put up a three-spot in the second inning to provide a cushion for Arroyo (4-4), who yielded just five hits while issuing two walks. Following consecutive singles by Todd Frazier and Donald Lutz, each of whom had two hits and an RBI, catcher Ryan Hanigan delivered a no-doubter to left field for his first home run of the season.

"It was still close before our offense exploded at the end," Reds manager Dusty Baker said.

Joey Votto went 4-for-4 with a homer and drew two walks in six trips to the plate for Cincinnati, which won for the 11th time in 14 contests.

Kyle Kendrick (4-2), who had gone at least six innings while allowing two runs or less in seven straight starts, was tagged for four runs on eight hits over six innings to absorb the loss. The Reds put six more runs across the plate against Phillies relievers.

"You have got to stay together and keep plugging at it, you have got to grind it out," Philadelphia manager Charlie Manuel said. "That's actually how you build heart and strength about your team. That's actually how you become a team."

Kendrick allowed at least two baserunners in each of the first three innings and put a man in scoring position in all six innings he was on the hill, however he pitched well with runners in scoring position. The lone Cincinnati run aside from Hanigan's three-run shot came in the sixth, when Zack Cozart doubled down the first base line to plate Hanigan, who was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame.

Cincinnati tacked on four insurance runs in the eighth against B.J. Rosenberg, Jeremy Horst and Phillippe Aumont.

After Rosenberg surrendered three singles to load the bases, Jay Bruce knocked in a run with his sacrifice fly to center against Horst. Aumont then took the hill and quickly allowed Votto to score on a wild pitch past catcher Erik Kratz. Frazier and Lutz then delivered an RBI apiece before Hanigan flied out to end the stanza.

Votto's two-run blast in the ninth inning off Chad Durbin capped off a forgettable outing for Philadelphia pitchers.

Game Notes

Reds' prospect Neftali Soto made his major league debut when he took over at first base in the ninth inning. Soto was called up from Triple-A Louisville prior to the game ... The Phils have been shut out six times this year. They were blanked six times total last season ... The 10-0 final is most lopsided Phillies shutout loss since Sept. 12, 2007, when they were defeated 12-0 by the Rockies.
