Questionable call helps Brewers nip Phils
Jun 2, 2013 - 3:46 AM Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Jonathan Lucroy went 2-for-4 with a key late solo homer and two runs scored as the Milwaukee Brewers edged the Philadelphia Phillies, 4-3, in the middle test of a three-game set at Citizens Bank Park.Logan Schafer went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and an RBI and Jean Segura added an RBI triple and a run scored for the Brewers, winners in two straight.
Wily Peralta (4-6) gave up two runs on eight hits while striking out six over seven innings to earn the win.
Francisco Rodriguez gave up a leadoff homer to Freddy Galvis, but stranded a pair of runners in a controversial ninth inning to pick up his third save.
Jimmy Rollins, who didn't start because of a foot injury, reached with a pinch-hit single. Phils pitcher Kyle Kendrick replaced Rollins on the base paths and moved to second on Ben Revere's sacrifice bunt. Kendrick was then picked off second by Rodriguez. Replays, however, showed that Segura couldn't handle the throw at second and was not able to control the ball until after Kendrick was back on the base.
"We got a lucky break, and that's the difference in the game," Segura said. "We got this guy out, and we're happy we got it."
Cesar Hernandez followed with a double and Domonic Brown was intentionally walked, but Rodriguez got Michael Martinez to ground out to end the game.
"We had a chance to definitely tie the game up, but we couldn't pull it out," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. "At the same time, they let us hang around there close enough where we had a chance."
Tyler Cloyd (1-2) was tagged for three runs -- two earned -- on eight hits over seven innings to absorb the loss.
Milwaukee pushed a pair of runs across in the second inning. Aramis Ramirez doubled and Lucroy followed with a single to put runners on the corners. Schafer then ripped a base hit to right field to score Ramirez. Lucroy took off for third and Kevin Frandsen was unable to block Delmon Young's throw, allowing Lucroy to break for homer. Cloyd, who was backing up third on the play, was unable to throw out Lucroy at the plate.
The Phillies got on the board in the fourth. With runners on the corners and one out, Frandsen tapped a grounder to Segura at shortstop. Segura flipped the ball to Jeff Bianchi at second, but Bianchi couldn't handle the flip and Brown scored from third.
Segura extended the Brewers' lead to 3-1 with an RBI triple in the fifth inning. Segura lifted a fly ball to deep right field that bounced off Young's glove, allowing Norichika Aoki to score.
Philadelphia made it a one-run game in the sixth on Eric Kratz's base hit to center. Young singled and moved to second on a Kevin Frandsen grounder before coming around on Young's single.
Lucroy smashed a solo homer in the eighth off of Mike Adams to put the Brewers up 4-2.
Game Notes
Lucroy is 7-for-9 with three homers over his last two games ... Milwaukee has secured its first series win since taking two-of-three from the Pittsburgh Pirates April 29-30 ... Brown drew his first walk since April 30 ... The Phillies were just 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position and left 10 runners on base.
