Cashner stellar as Padres edge Braves

Jun 12, 2013 - 7:19 AM San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - Andrew Cashner pitched a career-high eight innings and the San Diego Padres defeated the Atlanta Braves, 3-2, in the middle test of a three-game series at Petco Park.

Cashner (5-3) allowed two runs on six hits and a walk in his outing. Luke Gregerson got the final out in the ninth to notch his third save.

Chase Headley hit a solo homer, while Nick Hundley and Carlos Quentin each drove in one run apiece for the Padres, who have won five of their last seven games.

Freddie Freeman had an RBI and Jason Heyward had a run scored for the Braves, who saw starter Tim Hudson (4-6) give up three runs on five hits while striking out seven in 7 1/3 innings.

"He was great," Freeman said of Hudson. "He pitched great and we should have got the win for him today."

Andrelton Simmons started the game with a single, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Freeman.

The Padres responded with a run in each of the first three innings. Headley smashed a two-out solo shot in the first while Hundley delivered a two-out RBI double to left in the second. In the third, Everth Cabrera ripped a double to left and scored on a single by Quentin.

"He's the type of pitcher that he's not going to give you a lot to hit," Headley said of Hudson. "I had to cycle through some pitches, battle some good pitches off from him and finally got one I could handle."

Hudson retired the next 13 batters before giving up an infield single by pinch-hitter Jesus Guzman to begin the eighth.

Atlanta got one run across in the sixth. Heyward singled to right, advanced to third on a single by Justin Upton and reached home on a double play by Freeman.

However, the Braves were hitless over the final three frames.
