Reds continue mastery of Cubs at Wrigley

Jun 13, 2013 - 12:37 AM Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Todd Frazier's seventh-inning home run was the difference as the Cincinnati Reds squeaked past the Chicago Cubs, 2-1, in the third edition of a four-game series from Wrigley Field.

Brandon Phillips knocked in the other run for the Reds, who extended their win streak on the north side of Chicago this season to six games.

"I don't know what it is," said Reds manager Dusty Baker. "We just have to feel fortunate that it happens like it happens."

Mike Leake (6-3) tossed eight solid innings, scattering three hits, one run and a walk while striking out six. Aroldis Chapman completed the contest with a perfect ninth for his 17th save.

Nate Schierholtz hit a second-inning homer for the Cubs, while Travis Wood (5-5) gave up just four hits and two runs over seven full frames in defeat.

"It's getting to be a broken record. 'Woody' pitched another great game and he's got nothing to show for it," lamented Cubs manager Dale Sveum.

Frazier began the seventh by depositing a pitch into the bleachers in left center for a 2-1 Reds' edge.

"Just trying to find different release points, trying to pick up pitches," Frazier said about what he did on his day off Monday -- which paid off with homers in back-to-back games. "It's really hard to do, but at the same time it keeps you concentrating on the game the whole time."

The visitors then put two on with two down in the eighth against James Russell, but failed to increase their lead when Jay Bruce grounded back to the mound.

Leake dealt easily with a one-out single from Darwin Barney in the home half, fanning pinch-hitter Julio Borbon looking and getting David DeJesus on a liner.

Chapman fanned the first two batters he faced in the home ninth, then induced a game-ending grounder to second by pinch-hitter Alfonso Soriano.

Schierholtz got to Leake with one out in the second, clearing the ivy in right to put the Cubs on the board.

Cincinnati finally responded in the sixth, as Shin-Soo Choo doubled with one out and scored on a two-out single from Phillips.

Game Notes

Cincinnati also extended its franchise record streak to 12 wins in a row at Wrigley dating back to Aug. 10 of last season ... Leake, who worked his longest outing of the season, has gone 4-1 in his last six starts ... Prior to the contest, the Cubs placed pitcher Zach Putnam on the 15-day disabled list with right elbow soreness and recalled pitcher Brooks Raley from Triple-A Iowa.
