Freeman's HR in ninth ends late night in Atlanta
Jun 18, 2013 - 7:23 AM Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Freddie Freeman blasted a two-run homer in the ninth inning to lift the Atlanta Braves to a 2-1 win over the New York Mets on Monday.Mets starter Dillon Gee (5-7) scattered three hits over 8 1/3 innings, then gave up a base hit to Justin Upton before Freeman crushed a no-doubter over the wall in right field.
"I knew I hit it good enough. I didn't know if it was going to stay fair, actually, because it was an inside pitch. I didn't know if I was able to get my hands inside. But once I saw it get up to its highest peak, I knew it was gone," said Freeman.
David Carpenter (1-0) worked a scoreless ninth to pick up the win.
The game was delayed three hours, 43 minutes because of rain. Both Gee and Atlanta starter Tim Hudson mowed through the opposing lineups once the tarps were pulled off until New York finally broke through in the seventh inning.
John Buck opened the seventh with a base hit that was deflected by Braves second baseman Dan Uggla. Buck moved to second on Omar Quintanilla's slow groundout to third, and Gee followed with a base hit to left field to bring Buck around.
It was the only blemish for Hudson, who scattered six hits and struck out six over seven innings.
Gee worked around a one-out walk in the eighth inning and retired the first batter in the ninth before giving up Upton's base hit that set the table for the game-winner.
"When it comes right down to it I just didn't get it done. I had the opportunity and I just couldn't finish it," said Gee.
The game ended at 1:22 a.m. EST, and the teams are scheduled to play a day/night double header on Tuesday. The opener of the twinbill is slated for 1:10 p.m.
Game Notes
Gee, who was credited with his second career complete game, has never tossed a shutout ... Freeman has seven home runs this season ... Hudson, who hasn't picked up a win since May 5, has lasted at least seven innings in four straight starts.
