Hamels returns to form as Phils dump Nats again
Jul 10, 2013 - 3:41 AM Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Cole Hamels allowed one run over eight innings, and Michael Young hit a two-run double to pace Philadelphia's 4-2 victory against Washington in the second edition of a four-game set.Hamels (4-11) posted wins in back-to-back starts for the first time in 2013, scattering six hits and one walk to go with four strikeouts.
"I know it was hot, but I was able to maintain the energy and intensity level," Hamels said.
Antonio Bastardo gave up a run in the ninth, but held on for his second save.
Chase Utley doubled and scored twice, while Domonic Brown added an RBI for the Phillies, who have taken the first two in the series and won five of six overall.
Jayson Werth homered for the Nationals, who have been limited to four runs thus far after erupting for 32 during their four-game win streak prior to arriving in Philadelphia.
"This is a good-hitting ballpark. We didn't get anything going," Nationals manager Davey Johnson said.
Taylor Jordan (0-2) was tagged for eight hits and four runs -- three earned -- over 5 2/3 frames and took the loss.
Ben Revere and Jimmy Rollins both singled to begin the sixth, and an error on Adam LaRoche's throw to second after fielding an Utley grounder went to left field, plating Revere and leaving runners on the corners. Following Brown's pop out, Young doubled home both to make it 4-1.
Hamels put two on in the seventh, but worked out of trouble. He loaded the bases with one out in the eighth on singles by Scott Hairston and Ian Desmond followed by a walk to Bryce Harper, but fanned Ryan Zimmerman and induced an inning-ending fly out from Werth to complete his outing.
Anthony Rendon walked with one out and scored on a two-out, pinch-hit RBI double from Ramos which cut the Nats' deficit to 4-2. Hairston then popped out to second to end the game.
Werth bested Hamels with one out in the second, sending the left-hander's pitch into the seats in left center to put Washington on the board.
In the fourth, Utley slugged a two-out double and scored when Werth short- hopped a sinking liner from Brown in right field and Nats catcher Kurt Suzuki dropped his throw to the plate.
The Phils failed to break the tie despite two singles to begin the home fifth.
