Phils edge Nats

Jul 12, 2013 - 5:49 AM Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Kevin Frandsen's pinch-hit RBI double in the seventh helped the Philadelphia Phillies take a 3-1 win over the Washington Nationals to wrap up a four-game set.

Ben Revere had two hits and drove in a run while Michael Young also had an RBI for the Phillies, who took three of four in the set and have won six of their last eight games.

Kyle Kendrick (8-6) bounced back from a pair of rough outings as he gave up just a run on five hits over seven innings to get the win.

"We scored runs when we needed to. I knew they had their horse throwing tonight, so I had to keep the game close and give us a chance to win. I was able to do that, and our guys put up some big runs when we needed to," Kendrick said.

Ryan Zimmerman drove in the only run of the game for the Nationals, who had won four straight coming into the series.

"There is a long way to go. A lot of guys are getting to where they need to be. It was a tough ball game. I little break here or there and we could have won three of four," said Nationals manager Davey Johnson.

Jordan Zimmermann (12-4) was touched for two runs on eight hits with six strikeouts over 6 1/3 innings of work. It was his first loss since May 29 as he was 4-0 in his previous seven starts.

The Nationals nearly got on the board in the first inning as Jayson Werth singled to left with Bryce Harper on second. Harper went for home, but was nailed at the plate by Domonic Brown to end the inning.

In the fifth, Kurt Suzuki made it to second to start the inning thanks to a bad throw from Michael Young, but was then thrown out at third by Carlos Ruiz on Zimmermann's sacrifice bunt attempt. Denard Span then hit into a double play to end the inning.

The Phillies got on the board in the fifth as Ruiz reached base with a one-out single, moved to second on Kendrick's sac bunt, and scored thanks to a base hit from Revere for a 1-0 lead.

Washington answered in the sixth as Harper tripled with one out and scored on a sacrifice fly from Zimmerman to tie the game.

The Phils came right back in the seventh as Darin Ruf led off with a double and later scored on a pinch-hit double from Frandsen for a 2-1 lead.

In the eighth, the Phils added a run as Chase Utley led off with a double, moved to third on Brown's fly out and came home on a fielder's choice to second by Young as he beat the tag at the plate for a 3-1 advantage.

Jonathan Papelbon put the Nationals down in order in the ninth to pick up his 20th save of the season.
