Phillies rip Hefner, Mets behind early torrent of offense

Jul 20, 2013 - 5:06 AM Flushing, NY (Sports Network) - The Philadelphia Phillies came out of the All- Star break swinging and as a result, are back over the .500 mark for the first time in over a month.

Domonic Brown went 3-for-5 with a home run and was one of five Phillies with multiple hits in Friday's 13-8 thumping of Jeremy Hefner and the New York Mets at Citi Field.

The Phillies wasted no time in hanging 11 runs on the board in the first three frames. Michael Young stroked a three-run homer, John Mayberry knocked in two runs and Delmon Young ended with three hits and an RBI in the outburst.

Hefner (4-7) took the brunt of it, charged with eight of the runs on 10 hits in two-plus innings of work. New York ended with five unanswered runs, capped on David Wright's two-run homer, but the deficit was too great to overcome.

"It was execution," Hefner said. "A couple of not hard hit balls dropped in. Previously, especially in the last two months, those balls were getting caught."

The Met starter was undefeated in his previous six outings coming in, but his struggles against the Phillies continued. He owns a 13.75 ERA in six career games against the club, and Philadelphia has won seven straight in Queens.

Kyle Kendrick (9-6) served up a three-run homer to Marlon Byrd and was charged with six runs in 5 2/3 innings, but was good enough to get a win behind an offense that generated 15 hits.

Chase Utley added a two-run homer late and had three RBI for the Phillies (49-48), winners in nine of their last 12 and above .500 for the first time since June 6.

"We just have to keep it rolling. Guys are playing good right now," Kendrick said.

The Phillies made Hefner's fantastic end to the first half seem like a distant memory from the get go, battering the right-hander with six hits -- including five in a row -- during a four-run first inning.

It started with Utley's RBI triple over the head of Kirk Nieuwenhuis in center, and the Phillies received three run-scoring singles on Brown's knock into left, Delmon Young's infield hit and Mayberry's slapper into left.

Brown's towering leadoff homer in the third opened a five-run edge for Philly, and Hefner's day ended without getting an out in the frame, with Delmon Young and Mayberry chasing him from the contest following run-scoring hits.

Reliever Greg Burke didn't fare much better, immediately serving up an RBI double to Carlos Ruiz. Philadelphia sent 10 batters to the plate in the inning and Michael Young added the final blow with a three-run homer to make it 11-0.

The Mets didn't record their first hit until the fourth when they strung together five in a row to start the frame, which was highlighted by Byrd's three-run homer.

Utley's two-run shot in the fifth made it 13-3, but New York got a run back in the home half on an RBI groundout from Daniel Murphy.

The Mets pushed two more runs across the following frame and were behind 13-6 with a threat going, but pinch-hitter Josh Satin grounded out with the bases loaded to end the inning.

Wright stroked a two-run homer in the ninth to account for the final margin.
