Phillies' Hamels cools off red-hot Braves

Aug 13, 2013 - 4:38 AM Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Cole Hamels pitched a complete game after an hour and 48-minute rain delay as the Philadelphia Phillies topped the Atlanta Braves, 5-1, in the first of a three-game set.

Hamels (5-13) earned his first win since July 9. The left-hander surrendered only one run, which came with two outs in the ninth, on six hits while striking out nine batters.

"It's something where I know we haven't done it much," Hamels said about the chance to throw a shutout. "But we have to start something. This is the pride we all have."

Cody Asche drove in three runs on a homer in the sixth inning and finished 2- for-4 with a stolen base while crossing the plate twice to help snap the Phillies' 11-game road losing streak.

Julio Teheran (9-6) gave up four runs on six hits in six frames for Atlanta and suffered his first loss since July 14.

Jason Heyward went 2-for-4 with a double for Atlanta, which has only lost two of its last 17 games.

The game was marred by a tragic incident, however, as an unidentified man fell about 65 feet from a platform at Turner Field and landed in a private parking lot shortly after the start of the contest. He was transported to a local hospital before being pronounced dead.

Atlanta's Brian McCann hit a double over to right to start off the bottom of the second inning and was moved over to third after Chris Johnson grounded out to second. Hamels diffused the Atlanta threat, however, by striking out Dan Uggla and B.J. Upton to end the inning.

Hamels hit a stand-up triple right past the glove of left fielder Justin Upton in the top of the third. Jimmy Rollins then hit a hard liner to left for a single that scored Hamels from third and put the Phillies up 1-0.

Philadelphia's threat continued in the third when Chase Utley hit a soft line- drive single into center field to move Rollins over to third. Teheran walked Domonic Brown to load the bases before getting Darin Ruf to ground out to end the inning.

The Phillies jumped to a four-run lead in the sixth inning when Asche crushed a fastball into the right-field seats after Utley singled to right and Ruf was hit by a pitch.

Asche singled to lead off the ninth inning and stole the first base of his major league career before reaching home on a Carlos Ruiz single up the middle.

The Braves scored their only run of the night in the final frame. Justin Upton led off the inning with a double and was brought home on a Johnson ground-rule double to right field.

"Anytime you play the Phillies, this can happen with the guys they're running out there," Johnson said of Hamels. "When you catch a guy like that in this league it's tough sledding. We'll just try to go out and get them tomorrow."
