Lee pitches Phillies past Mets
Aug 27, 2013 - 5:52 AM Flushing, NY (Sports Network) - Cliff Lee pitched eight solid innings and Cody Asche hit a two-run triple as the Philadelphia Phillies took a 2-1 win over the New York Mets to open a four-game series.Lee (11-6) gave up just one run on five hits with a walk and seven strikeouts to win for the first time since July 5 against Atlanta. He was 0-4 in his previous six starts.
"I didn't feel as good as it turned out to be honest with you," Lee said after the game. "I felt like I had to battle and was able to just continue to get outs."
Michael Young had two hits and scored once, while Darin Ruf also scored for the Phillies, who have won seven of their past nine games.
Zack Wheeler (6-3) was the hard-luck loser as he worked 6 2/3 innings and gave up just two runs and five hits with a walk and seven strikeouts. Andrew Brown drove in the lone run of the game for the Mets, who have dropped five straight.
Before the game, the Mets received some terrible news as phenom pitcher Matt Harvey's season is over after an MRI on Monday revealed that he has a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow.
"No pitcher ever wants to go through that and no other pitcher wants to hear about that," Wheeler said about his teammate. "Especially to a good guy like Matt. He's had a tremendous year ever since this year started, ever since he came up."
He earned his first career All-Star nod this season and finishes his second campaign 9-5 with a 2.27 earned run average in 26 games.
The Mets got on the board in the second inning as Marlon Byrd doubled to start the inning and quickly came home when Brown singled to center. Lee limited the damage by retiring the next three batters.
Philadelphia went on top in the fourth inning. With two outs, Young kept the inning alive with a single and Ruf worked a walk. Asche then launched a pitch that rolled to the wall in right for a triple.
After giving up a one-out single in the fourth, Lee got Brown to hit into a double play and didn't allow a man on base over the next three innings.
Travis d'Arnuad singled with one out in the eighth and pinch-hitter Lucas Duda drew a two-out walk to bring the tying run to scoring position, but Lee struck out Juan Lagares.
Jonathan Papelbon worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his 22nd save of the season.
