Young smacks four hits as Phillies down Cubs
Aug 31, 2013 - 4:10 AM Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Michael Young capped off a four-hit afternoon by driving in the game-winning run in the ninth for the Philadelphia Phillies, who erased a five-run deficit to defeat the Chicago Cubs 6-5 in the first of a three-game set.Kevin Gregg (2-4) hit Roger Bernadina with a pitch to put him on base to start the ninth. He proceeded to steal second and was plated on Young's single that blooped into shallow right.
Kevin Frandsen went 2-for-3 with a triple and a home run for the Phillies, who have won four of their last six.
Both starters gave up five runs. Roy Halladay lasted five innings for the Phillies, while NL Player of the Week Jeff Samardzija tossed 6 2/3 innings with six strikeouts for the Cubs.
"It was hot, but it didn't really come into effect," Samardzija said. "It just got away from me a little bit."
Anthony Rizzo and Nate Schierholtz both hit solo shots for the Cubs, who have lost eight of their last ten.
B.J. Rosenberg (1-0) pitched a scoreless eighth before Jonathan Papelbon recorded his 23rd save of the season for interim manager and former Cubs' second baseman Ryne Sandberg, who heard cheers in his return to Wrigley Field.
"It was good. I heard it," Sandberg said of the cheers. "A little tip of the hat to the crowd for that."
Trailing 5-0, the Phillies started their comeback in the sixth inning when Frandsen reached third on a line drive to center that skipped past the glove of Junior Lake. He was brought home on a Young line drive to right. After a single from Jimmy Rollins, Chase Utley tripled on a sharp line drive to center to clear the bases. A Domonic Brown ground out brought in Utley.
Frandsen tied the game with a blast over the left field wall to even the score in the seventh.
Rizzo smacked a drive out to right-center field to give the Cubs an early lead in the first, while Schierholtz crushed a home run to right to start off Chicago's attack in the fourth. Donnie Murphy then doubled and Brian Bogusevic walked before they were moved over on a sacrifice bunt from Samardzija. Starlin Castro doubled on a sharp line drive to center to score the two runners and extend the Cubs' lead to four runs.
Singles from Rizzo and Dioner Navarro put men on first and second to start off the fifth for the Cubs. Bogusevic's single to right brought home Rizzo before a throw from catcher Carlos Ruiz beat him to second to record the final out of the frame.
Chicago threatened again in the seventh but ultimately came up short when John Mayberry threw Navarro, who singled and advanced to second on a Murphy walk, out at home plate.
